2004, September 12: New York Times - AL-AZHAR PARK, CAIRO This vast 74-acre park in downtown Cairo is one of the most spectacular urban renewal projects in the Middle East; a massive urban dump is being transformed into the city's largest green space. The boldness of the scheme, however, lies in its social mission. Conceived by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, its aim is to combine thoughtful design and historic preservation with a broader economic program in an effort to revive one of the city's poorest neighborhoods. Architecture and preservation, in other words, are regarded as more than aesthetic issues; they become critical tools in the reshaping of a culture's social fabric. The park will be opened at a ceremony on Sept. 29.
