Aga Khan IV - Timeline - 1995


January 1995: Mowlana Hazar Imam visited Moscow as guest of the Russian Government
and met with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Held
meetings with officials at the
highest levels of federal and local governments. Visited both houses of the Russian
Parliament, the Federation Council and the State Duma , and from the City Hall to the
Kremlin. Hazar Imam also met with senior diplomats, religious leaders, academicians and
representatives of the Russian and international Press.
Had separate meetings with Prime Minister Viktor
Chernomyrdin, Foreign Minister
Andrei Kozyrev, National Security Advisor to the President, Yuri Baturin, Secretary of
the National Security Council, Oleg Lobov, the Speaker of Federation Council, Vladinir
Shumeyko and the Mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov.
January 29,1995: First ever Mulaqat with Jamats of Central Asia at Moscow's Olimpiski
Stadium.
March 1995: Hazar Imam was invited to address the full session of the Executive Board of
UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris. Hazar Imam was described as a "leader of leaders"
and introduced as the 49th Imam and as a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammad. In
his speech, Hazar Imam said: "Private entrepreneurial thinking and good management are
becoming the driving forces behind economic development in the Third World." (click

November 1995: Princess Zahra visited various jamati
institutions worldwide as part of her portfolio
of Women's, Youth and Social Welfare affairs. She visited India,
Malagasy Republic and
Canadian cities. In the Malagasy Republic capital of Antananarivo, the Princess stopped by
the newly renovated Aga Khan Hostel.
May, 1995: Princess Zahra Aga Khan attented the
AKF Partnership Walk in Montreal.
May, 1995: Visit to Tajikistan. Jamat was granted first
ever Holy Deedar of an Imam in centuries at the Dushanbe Soccer Stadium on May 24, 1995 at 9:00 a.m. (See photos of the visit in the photo section below.
May 27, 1995: Speech at the Dushanbe Concert Hall
June 7: The Moscow Times: "Aga Khan's People Put Hope in a Worldly Savior" wrote Kathy Lally - PORSHINYOV, Tajikistan -- "Midnight, and the people of the Pamirs are waiting, their dark shapes dimly lit against the flames of 450 bubbling caldrons in this narrow valley". That was their first Didar.
November 25, 1995: Aga Khan Award
for Architecture held in Solo,
Indonesia. As State Guests, Hazar Imam and Princess Zahra had been received by
President Suharto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta where they witnessed the official
signing by the President of the commemorative postage stamps issued by Indonesia on the
occasion of the award ceremony. Twelve winners of the 1995
Aga Khan Award for
Architecture were announced. "The architectural and social problems facing Muslim
societies require a sharper critique than they have received in the past," the Master Jury
declared. "Have
the Muslim civilizations of today lost the capability to produce great architecture?" Asked the Aga Khan in His speech at the Karaton Surakarta.
November 1995: Princess Zahra addressed the charity
function held at Grosvenor Hotel,
London where the theme was "Water for Life". In her speech, Princess Zahra said;
"Investing in women yields high returns, both for themselves and for the generations to
come" (click here). Hazar Imam, in a message conveyed through Princess Zahra, said;
"Through the voice of My daughter, and at the end of her speech, I want to associate
Myself with the gratitude and respect she expressed for all those who have contributed to
the mission of the Aga Khan Foundation.

December 28, 1995: The French magazine "Paris
