1987
The Aga Khan Unit for Housing and Urbanisation was established at Harvard's Graduate School
of Design with a gift of U.S. $530,000.00 from Mowlana Hazar Imam to complement the work of
the Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture at Harvard. This Unit is an integral part of
Harvard and the M.I.T.
January 6, 1987: Hazar Imam arrived at 3:30 p.m. at Dacca's Zia International Airport where he
was greeted by President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Prime Minister Mizanur Rahman
Choudhury and other Government Ministers, Diplomatic Corps and Ismaili Leaders and members
of the Ismaili community. Hazar Imam then proceeded to the State Guest House "Shugandha".
January 6, 1987: Hazar Imam was Guest of Honour at a dinner hosted by President Ershad at the
Presidency "Bangabhabhan". President Ershad paid tributes to Hazar Imam and said: " the
invaluable contribution of your illustrious family to the cause of suffering humanity, particularly
of this sub-continent, is recorded in history." Hazar Imam in His speech held out the assurance
that the Aga Khan Network of institutions and programmes in the economic, social and cultural
fields will seek to continue to play their role here in Bangladesh as elsewhere in South Asia. (click

February 1987: Gave an interview titled "Unlikely Patriach".
March 18, 1987: Hazar Imam gave a keynote address to the International Development
Conference in Washington, D.C. Hazar Imam told the delegates that the Third World
development needed an environment ensuring confidence, predictability and trust.
Established housing and urbanisation research unit.
April 6, 1987: Attended a dinner at 10 Downing Street, London (Monday). Dinner was hosted by
the Prime Minister and Mr. Denis Thatcher in honour of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr.
Mohammad Khan Junejo.
April 8, 1987: Arrived in Lisbon, Portugal (Wednesday) and blessed Jamat with Holy Deedar.
Hazar Imam visited the National School of Public Health with which the Aga Khan Foundation is
collaborating in the field of health care.
April 1987: 3 day visit to Portugal where Mowlana Hazar Imam was Guest of Honour at a dinner
hosted by President Mario Soares. Hazar Imam also met the Prime Minister Anibalkcavaco Silva
and other Ministers.
April 1987: Tenth Annual seminar of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture was held in Granada,
Spain entitled "Architectural Education in the Islamic World". Seminar was opened by King Juan
Carlos and held at the legendary Alhambra Palace. (click here). Also attending were Queen Sofia,
Begum Salimah, Mata Salamat Om-e-Habibah and Prince Amyn Mohammad.
May 13, 1987: Accord with McMaster University for partnership in Education.
May 15, 1987: CIDA's participation in the AKF activities.
May 14, 1987: Hazar Imam spoke at the Globe & Mail Dinner in Toronto.
May 15, 1987: Hazar Imam was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of
Laws (LLD) by McMaster University at Hamilton Place in Hamilton, Ontario in recognition of his
leadership in the advancement of health and education in the world. (speech). In a tribute to Hazar
Imam, the President of the University Mr. Alvin Lee said, "In that Islamic tradition, which
treasures education, rest the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims and their religious leader, His Highness
the Aga Khan." Hazar Imam, in His convocation address, discussed the issues of ethics and
standards in Science. "Nations cannot assign these issues to a priesthood of science; they require
the resources of the human spirit as well as the mind."
May 16, 1987: Hazar Imam met with M.I.T. students at Cambridge, Massachusets who were the
first graduates of a new two-year post-graduate advanced degree programme in Architecture
launched in 1985 under the aegis of the Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture at Harvard
and M.I.T. At an informal ceremony, Hazar Imam presented the graduating students with a
personal gift and a certificate enrolling as the first members of a newly founded Aga Khan
Programme Alumni Association.
July 1987: King Juan Carlos of Spain presented Hazar Imam with the Gold Medal for
Architecture at a ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Madrid by the Higher Council of Spanish Architects.
August 1987: Costa Smeralda again in the news.
September 30, 1987: Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan inaugurates an exhibition of Jordanian
paintings by British artist Nicholas Egon at the Zamana Gallery in presence of Mowlana Hazar
Imam andBegum Salimah who made a speech. During her speech, Begum Salimah made flattering remarks.
November 16, 1987: Hazar Imam began a six day visit to Chitral and Gilgit districts in Northern
Pakistan. He was received at Chitral Airport by the Adviser to Chief Minister of NWFP, Mr.
Saeed Ahmad Khan, other Government officials and leaders of the Jamat. This was part of a 15 days visit to Pakistan.
November 17, 1987: Hazar Imam laid the foundation of the Students' Hostel at Booni, Northern
areas, Pakistan. In His speech, Hazar Imam said: "The architecture of the hostel will reflect
building designs of the region; it will be earthquake-resistant and , Inshallah, a place of beauty and

November 17, 1987: At Gharamchashma, along a one-mile road leading from the pendal to the
site of a lunch organised for Hazar Imam, the local Ismailis built 49 gaily decorated gates
signifying the 49 Imams.
November 19, 1987: Hazar Imam opened the Aga Khan Academy at Karimabad, Hunza. In His
speech, Hazar Imam said: "Education, it has been said, enables a person to "walk with confidence
on unfamiliar ground. What is this Academy doing to prepare its young women to walk with
confidence in a world of change?" (click here)
November 20, 1987: Signed Visitors' Book ofAKRSP with the words, "I have
spent here in the Northern Areas one of the most inspiring and exciting weeks of my life. Words
are shallow in comparison to the depth of feeling and admiration I have for the extraordinary
achievements of AKRSP, and everyone connected with it, achieved in the last five years.
Centuries of poverty and despair, human conflict and division appear to be fading into the past, as
new light and hope are projected onto a future which people can believe in. Yes, words do
fail .." Aga Khan.
December 7-9, 1987: More than 60 architects, scholars and critics attended the seminar in Malta
organised by the Aga Khan Award. In his inaugural remarks, the acting President of Malta, His
Excellency Mr. Paul Xuereb paid tribute to Mowlana Hazar Imam's "dedication to Architectural
excellence.." This was not just an aesthetic pursuit, but "a commitment to a proper environment
worthy of human beings," he said.
December 15, 1987: Mowlana Hazar Imam and Sir William Ryrie, Executive V.P. of International
Finance Corporation sign an agreement to increase the capital of Industrial Promotion Services
S.A. (Ivory Coast). Agreement was signed at Aiglemont to increase equity capital by U.S. $2.8
million to U.S. $4.2 million.
