LP Favored Aliysa broke away from the field in the final two furlongs to win the English Oaks for 3-year-old fillies yesterday at Epsom Downs. Aliysa, the 11-10 choice ridden by Walter Swinburn, stumbled coming out of the gate and was boxed in along the rail for much of the 1 1/2-mile turf race. But she sped past front-running Mamaluna in the stretch and won by three lengths over Snow Bride, ridden by Steve Cauthen.

TX Her time of 2:34.22 was only one-hundredth of a second off the Oaks record set by Time Charter in 1982. It was nearly seven-tenths of a second faster than the time recorded by Nashwan in his English Derby victory Wednesday. Swinburn rode Musical Bliss to victory in May in the 1,000 Guineas, the first classic of the season for fillies, but he switched to Aliysa for the Oaks. Musical Bliss tired near the finish yesterday and was seventh in the field of nine. The victory was the third in the Oaks for trainer Michael Stoute * and the first for the Aga Khan, the filly's owner and breeder.
