LP --- Walkathon benefits poor --- Organizers predicted a Sunday walkathon in Calgary would raise $150,000 for Third World development projects.

TX "We think we'll make our target of $150,000," said Shabir Premji, * secretary of the Calgary committee of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, a non-profit international development agency which sponsored the fifth annual Partnership Walk. Some $95,000 of the pledges - including corporate donations - had been collected as of Sunday night, Premji said. About 1,500 walkers participated in the event in Fish Creek Park. * The walkathon is sponsored by a foundation of the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims. But is intended to benefit the poor in Africa and Asia regardless of race, religion or political persuasion.

LP --- Fundraiser aids needy --- Organizers hope a 10-kilometre walkathon scheduled for today will blossom into a true multicultural event.

TX For the past five years, the Partnership Walk for Third World Development has been a largely ethnic affair, supported mainly by Calgary's Ismaili Muslim population. * And although the event is sponsored by a foundation of the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, event spokesman say it is designed to benefit the poor in Africa and Asia without regard to race, religion or political persuasion. "We would like to have more Canadians participate to make the walk a true partnership," said convenor Sherali Saju. The event begins at noon in the Glenfield area of Fish Creek Provincial Park.
