Aly Khan Memorial Cup to go on display at the National Horseracing Museum

A trophy won by Sir Winston Churchill's own colt is set to go on display at the National Horseracing Museum.

The Aly Khan Memorial Cup, which was raced for just once, has been donated to the museum to be displayed in the new centre in Charles II's racing stables when it opens to the public in 2016.

The cup was won by Churchill's horse High Hat, who was sired by Hyperion, and whose skeleton is on display at the museum, on July 4, 1961.

Director of the National Horseracing Museum, Chris Garibaldi, said: "The trophy is of particular importance to the history of horseracing in this country illustrating as it does in a single object both the pivotal role of the Aga Khan's family in their patronage of the sport and Sir Winston Churchill's private passion for the Turf.

"We are intending to feature the cup very prominently in our new Sporting Glory gallery in the Palace House redevelopment alongside Pathe newsreel both of the 1961 race itself and Sir Winston Churchill attending the races.

"It shows a less well known side to the most important British political figure of the 20th century and we could not be more pleased or honoured."

Aly Khan was a racehorse owner and jockey. His most famous horse was Petite Etoile, who came second place to High Hat in the race for the cup in 1961.

Classy Vazirabad far too good in Prix Chaudenay

By Peter Scargill and Jack Haynes 1:38PM 3 OCT 2015

Report: France, Saturday

Longchamp: Qatar Prix Chaudenay (Group 2) 1m7f, 3yo

VAZIRABAD thumped his rivals in the style of a useful individual as he stormed clear in the closing stages to win under a hands and heels ride for Christophe Soumillon.

Race result

Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre for the Aga Khan, Vazirabad needed to be niggled to get into contention rounding the turn for home but looked in a different league once his rider asked for an effort and he powered clear.

The others fought out the places between themselves with Vazirabad's only moment of concern coming when he jinked slightly just before the winning line.

De Royer-Dupre said: "He is a very nice horse who is improving all the time. He could be good enough to run over 12 furlongs. He won at Deauville on soft ground but it doesn't suit him. He likes the good ground he got here."

The Twisler, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam and ridden by Olivier Peslier, lacked the tactical speed to hold his position at the top of the straight and kept on for fifth.

Chapple-Hyam said: "We are disappointed, but he's come back safe and sound. Olivier said it was an interesting race in terms of the pace, but he didn't blame the ground.

"Olivier also said two miles would not be a problem for him, so that's good to hear. He's still in the Cesarewitch, but that will probably come to soon."

Report: Longchamp

Qatar Prix de Royallieu (Group 2) 1m4 ½f, 3yo+ fillies and mares

Christophe Soumillon and Alain de Royer-Dupre completed doubles as Candarliya justified favouritism in the staying fillies' contest.

Sent of the 4-6 favourite, Candarliya, also owned by the Aga Khan, needed to be cajoled along inside the final furlong to hold the sustained run of 12-1 shot Lady Of Kyushu, who ran on well in the closing stages, with Scalambra third.

It looked a relatively straightforward task for the Aga Khan's Dalakhani filly prior to the off as she finished a six-length second to Treve in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille last time, but she made hard work of securing this Group 2 prize yet confirmed her status as a filly in form this season.

John Gosden's Martlet held her own in this company, travelling well for a long way before failing to land a blow on the front three, finishing out of the places, while Peter Fahy's Ballybacka Queen led for a long way before weakening out of contention inside the final furlong and a half.

Royer-Dupre said: "I'm not surprised she won because she was second to Treve in a Group 1 last time. She has a big turn of foot and that is very impressive.

"She is a very light filly and that was her seventh run of the season so she will not run again this year. Next year I'm sure she will be a real Group 1 horse."

Flashback 1983: kidnapping of Shergar

Flashback 1983: kidnapping of Shergar

This weekend 33 years ago, prize-winning racehorse Shergar was kidnapped, never to be seen again

Image

Star: Shergar with Jockey Walter Swinburn after his Epsom Derby win in 1981.

One foggy evening in 1983, the IRA kidnapped a much-loved five-year-old from his home in Co Kildare. But, as one man who claimed to have heard the inside story later wrote, "They couldn't cope with him, he went demented, injured his leg and they killed him."

Share
Go To

That the five-year-old was a horse makes it less shocking than if it had been a human child, but at the time there was wide public anger at the kidnap of a national hero. Shergar had won the 1981 Epsom Derby, followed soon after by the Irish Derby; "He's only in an exercise canter!" gushed BBC commentator Peter O'Sullevan as he romped home by four lengths at the Curragh. Another big win came at Ascot in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes before he was named European Racehorse of the Year for 1981.

The horse was retired at the end of that season, and took up residence at Ballymany Stud, Co Kildare, where his arrival was marked by a parade down the main street in Newbridge behind the town band and school children waving the green and red colours of Shergar's owner, the Aga Khan, leader of about 20pc of the world's Shia Muslims.

The Aga Khan sold 34 shares in the horse for £250,000 each, and kept six for himself, valuing Shergar at £10m. In 1982 he produced 35 foals, and another 55 mares were lined up to be covered in 1983.

But one week before the stud season was due to begin, a group of at least six men drove a horsebox through the unlocked gates to Ballymany and forced the groom, James Fitzgerald to load the animal aboard while his family was held at gunpoint. The horse was driven away and Fitzgerald released three hours later.

In the Irish Independent, writer Anthony Cronin compared the heist to the theft of the Mona Lisa and the Irish Crown Jewels. Commentator Micheál O'Hehir said he rated the horse as good, possibly better, than the great Nijinsky, and expressed concern that it might lead to a flood of racehorse departures from Irish stables.

The police operation was not the Gardaí's finest hour, although they were hampered by an eight-hour delay in hearing about the crime and because it was carried out on the same day as the biggest horse sale in the country, with horseboxes teeming on the nation's roads. The garda in charge, James 'Spud' Murphy, pursued unusual methods, with clairvoyants and psychics sought out for their views. His trilby sparked a resurgence in demand for the hat, with many of the international media covering the case adopting his style.

The gang tried to secure a ransom, and enlisted three UK racing journalists as intermediaries, but the deal collapsed in farce and one, Derek Thompson of ITV, received a call telling him there had been an accident and the horse was dead.

No ransom was paid, and most of the owners were unable to secure payment from insurers, who claimed there was no evidence of the horse's death. The mystery of who carried out the crime, and the last resting place of the great racehorse, have still to be solved.

Aga Khan maintain the family grip on one of the greatest prizes in racing

Paul Hayward Chief Sports Writer

4 June 2016 • 6:59pm

Aside from being the England football team’s hotelier in Chantilly for Euro 2016, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan VI is indelibly associated with one of the grandest Derby wins, 35 years ago. Shergar’s rampaging 10-length victory ended in one of the great racing tragedies – his kidnap and disappearance – but the bloodstock empire he represented maintains its hold on Epsom’s biggest prize.

Harzand’s one-and-a-half length win over US Army Ranger at odds of 13-2 was a first in the race for Dermot Weld, his peripatetic trainer, and Pat Smullen, an eight-time champion jockey in Ireland.

But for the Aga Khan it extended a tradition started by his grandfather in 1930. Blenhem was the first of five Derby winners for the current Aga’s predecessor and was followed by Bahram (1935), Mahmoud (1936), My Love (1948) and Tulyar in 1952.

The current spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims has captured Flat racing’s defining event with Shergar, Shahrastani, Kahyasi, Sinndar and now a horse who would have been withdrawn at the start had Smullen noticed anything amiss after his mount sustained a foot injury on the way over.

If Harzand’s mile and a half journey was a drama, it was nothing compared to Shergar’s life story: a tale that clearly still haunts the Aga.

Asked to compare his quintet of Epsom champions, he said: “I remember Shergar coming round Tattenham Corner and thinking – he’s cantering. Looking through my binoculars I thought – this can’t be happening.”

That chillingly exciting image is easy to recall, even now, and while Shergar’s owner has bred countless champions since, his green and red silks will always evoke one of racing’s deepest and darkest mysteries.

“Winning the Derby is a goal for any owner. It has been for centuries. This is a great race with a great history,” the Aga said here. “It’s been that way for three generations of my family.”

Weld is another statesman of the racing game, but despite winning big races on four continents since taking over his father’s training licence in 1972, he had never won the race that still elevates trainers to the highest echelon. He pioneered global training missions, winning the Belmont Stakes, a leg of America’s Triple Crown, and the Melbourne Cup. These overseas victories marked him out as an innovator, but six Derby runners since 1986 had carried him no closer than third (Casual Conquest, in 2008).

Was the elusive nature of Derby success needling him? You would guess so, judging by the swiftness of his response. “I’ve trained, I think, 23 Classic winners in Europe,” Weld said. “My first was Blue Wind in the Epsom Oaks a long time ago [1981 – the same year as Shergar]. I’ve won a couple of Irish Derbys. I’ve always wanted an Epsom Derby. Perhaps we haven’t had a horse good enough. Today was the day.”
US ARMY RANGER
The favourite was pipped to the post Credit: Getty

Harzand and US Army Ranger will probably meet again in the Irish Derby at The Curragh, across the road from where Weld trains. “It’s probably hereditary in his breeding that he’s a late maturing horse,” Weld said. “We often say - ‘Oh the Derby three-year-olds, the staying three-year-olds, are not as good as we hoped’ - and lo and behold a good horse comes out and wins the Derby.

“It’s nature that these late maturing horses usually run well about this time of year. These are typical late maturing colts. When we worked him the other day at The Curragh we saw him moving forward nicely, we saw that sparkle. He is a good tough horse, a real solid individual.”

A son of Sea The Stars, the brilliant 2009 Derby winner, Harzand has corrected an anomaly in Weld’s fine career and showed the Aga Khan’s team to be as skilled as ever at breeding champions. There will always be a shiver, though, when we recall that the most aristocratic of the owner’s five Derby winners was Shergar.

Famous Five: The Aga Khan's Derby winners

By David Baxter 6:32PM 4 JUN 2016

Harzand gave the Aga Khan a fifth Derby winner and this year's winner joins an illustrious group of Epsom scorers for the owner.
Shergar

Shergar 1981
The standard which all Derby winners should be held to, Shergar was magnificent during his career, and his ten-length winning margin in the Derby is yet to be topped.
Shahrastani

Shahrastani 1986
The son of Nijinsky completed the British and Irish Derby double, downing the previously unbeaten Dancing Brave at Epsom before winning at the Curragh by eight lengths.
Kahyasi

Kahyasi 1988
The green and red silks are traditionally associated with the Aga Khan, but Kahyasi won in his much less seen second colours of green and brown hoops. Like Shahrastani, he then went to the Curragh and won the Irish Derby.
Sinndar

Sinndar 2000
Epsom would prove to be the starting point of a unique treble for Sinndar, as he then won the Irish Derby before claiming the Arc leading his jockey Johnny Murtagh to say: "He's the best horse...unbeatable."
Harzand2-360

Harzand 2016
A fifth win for the Aga Khan nearly did not happen as a spread plate on the morning of the Derby left Harzand's participation in doubt. However there was no major damage and he beat US Army Ranger to give trainer Dermot Weld and jockey Pat Smullen their first wins in the Classic.

Almanzor wins French Derby to deny Aga Khan a major double

Almanzor, a 20-1 outsider trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, denied the Aga Khan a Derby double on Sunday when he came with a strong run inside the final furlong to beat Zarak in the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly.

Zarak, in the same green and red colours which were carried to victory by Harzand at Epsom on Saturday, stayed on strongly in the closing stages but could not get on terms with the winner. Foundation, from John Gosden’s yard, attracted plenty of support before the race and set off as the 4-1 favourite but finished well beaten, while Roger Charlton’s Imperial Aviator, a supplementary entry, also failed to mount a serious challenge.

The French Derby is run over 10 furlongs rather than the Epsom Classic’s distance of a mile and a half but the winner often develops into a leading candidate for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Almanzor is quoted at around 16-1 for European racing’s all-aged championship event in October, when the race will be staged at Chantilly while its traditional home at Longchamp is redeveloped.

“He is improving and I had no doubts at all about the trip or his condition coming into the race,” Rouget said. “We always thought he had a chance. We wouldn’t have run him otherwise. We have no plans at the moment but he’ll be a better horse on better ground.”

Dermot Weld, the trainer of Harzand, said on Sunday that he will consider running the Derby winner in the St Leger at Doncaster in September.

“Time will reveal all,” Weld said. “He’s a lovely colt and he could be an ideal English Leger horse or, indeed, if it was a wet autumn, a lovely horse for the Arc.”

Hugo Palmer, who took the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket with Galileo Gold in April, added another Classic to his record when Hawksmoor took the German 1,000 Guineas at Düsseldorf.

Harzand completes Derby double

Ben Asgari@BenAsgariRacing

English Derby winner Harzand added a second Classic to his record when he won the Group 1 Irish Derby at the Curragh in Ireland overnight.

The son of Sea The Stars provided his trainer Dermot Weld with a first English Derby triumph earlier this month when he comfortably had the measure of Aidan O’Brien’s Idaho, but had to dig deep this time to beat the same horse by a half-length.

Weld described Harzand’s performance to complete the English-Irish Derby double and provide him with a third Irish derby success as one of the most satisfying achievements in his career and said the obvious target for the horse now was the Arc de Triomphe in October.

“It was a very special day,” Weld said.

“This was a better race than at Epsom because both those horses have improved from Epsom and it’s typical of three-year-old colts at this time of the year, the really good ones tend to just get better and better and those two horse quickened all the way down the straight in really good fashion.

“We’ve had a lot of minor problems with this horse’s foot.

“He had to go on a course of antibiotics the week after his last race and you never know how much that was going to take out of him but we were happy with his blood picture and his general appearance and today was his day.

“Now it’s forwards and upwards and I will speak with his highness (owner, His Highness Aga Khan) but obviously the Arc de Triomphe will be his target.”

Outsider Stellar Mass finished third behind Harzand and Idaho, narrowly holding off Ed Dunlop’s late-entry Red Verdon in fourth.

Jockey Pat Smullen praised the performance of Harzand to fight off the challenge of Idaho and his jockey Ryan Moore.

“Ryan made his challenge with one run but my horse found again in the last 150 yards,” Smullen said.

“When they’re as good and tough and dependable as this horse it makes my job easier.”

HH The Agakhan is a owner of few prestigous stud farms which breeds and trains Thoroughbred horses.
So horses under the banner of the stud farm and owner colours worn by rider do participate in races worldwide.
So the title of 'Horse racing' give very narrow definition and some ignorant may relate it to word gambling.
I feel a suitable title can be 'THOROUGHBRED HORSE BREEDING".
and by default horse racing become a sub part of it and the word gambling has NO near co relation to this word and title.

Responsibility must comes along with Love for ALI.

Harzand triumphs in the Irish Derby

Harzand triumphs at the Curragh to complete Derby double

Harzand triumphs at the Curragh to complete Derby double

Harzand has won all four of his starts this season

Harzand completed the English-Irish Derby double when taking the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored Classic at the Curragh as the 4-6 favourite.

The Aga Khan-owned colt had to overcome a morning injury scare on the way to Epsom glory earlier this month, but had no such problem with the short trip from his trainer Dermot Weld's stable at Headquarters.

In the race itself, however, Harzand had to show all the qualities of a top-class thoroughbred as his old rival Idaho did not go down without a fight.

The leading pair pulled clear in the final quarter-mile, with Harzand asserting close home in the hands of Pat Smullen to win by half a length.

Stellar Mass was three-and-a-quarter lengths away in third and Ed Dunlop's British raider, the supplemented Red Verdon, just behind in fourth after putting in good late work.

Harzand's pacemaking stablemate Ebediyin did his job to ensure a good gallop and was allowed an easy lead.

Idaho's stable companion Port Douglas followed him in second place, with Harzand hard on their heels.

Smullen decided to use Harzand's stamina to the full by taking the lead as soon as they turned for home.

But the Aidan O'Brien-trained Idaho, who had finished third behind Harzand at Epsom, soon ranged alongside under Ryan Moore and a thrilling duel ensued.

The two protagonists quickly put daylight between their rivals and there was nothing between them until Harzand proved the stronger close home to become the 18th horse to complete the Derby double.

Harzand is the fifth horse to win both the English and Irish Derbies for the Aga Khan after Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1989) and Sinndar (2000).

It was Weld's third win in the Irish Derby after previous triumphs for Zagreb in 1996 and Grey Swallow in 2004, and a second for Smullen after riding the latter.

"I knew Aidan would have his horse better than at Epsom so I knew our horse had to be better than at Epsom to win again," said the Rosewell House handler.

"He ran a magnificent race. He showed the speed that he has today. People were saying he didn't have speed, well you saw it today.

"Those two horses really picked up and quickened. Idaho is a high-class horse, he's always been that and he was at his best today. It was a great day, a great ride - a special day. It was a proper horse race.

"He'll have a good break now and we'll train him for the Arc."

Weld had been somewhat guarded on his chance at the beginning of the week and added: "I was concerned because he had a very hard race at Epsom. We always knew he was very tough, but he had to be 110% today.

"This is a very, very special race and I've been enjoying it since I was a child. I've been fortunate enough to win it three times now."

The Aga Khan said: "This horse is very good. It's a wonderful family and we checked him with all our mares and he'll mate very well with them, so we're looking forward to when he goes to stud and we'll be right behind him.

"Things are shaping up very well. I'm not sure we really know his limits. Neither at Epsom nor here, I don't think we've seen the best of this horse, he can do more."

Smullen said: "He's such a great horse, he's got such courage and determination. Ryan came with one good determined run, I needed this horse to dig deep for me and he did - how good is he?

"I don't think I've ever ridden such a courageous horse. I just can't get over his courage in the last half-furlong.

"This matches Epsom, in front of our home crowd. The pressure was on and we pulled it off. He's a dual Derby winner now.

"You can give horses good rides, bad rides - but when they're as good as this lad and they're as determined as this horse it just makes it easy. There's no knowing where this horse will end up.

"He's so tough and he's not just tough, he's got pace. He's a very, very good horse and I'd love to think he'd be an Arc horse."

Harzand can deliver a long overdue Arc to the Aga Khan
Sunday 2nd October 2016

France

Harzand - Sea The Stars x Hazariya (Xaar)
16.05 CET Chantilly - Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Group 1)
Dermot Weld
Pat Smullen

Vedevani - Dubawi x Vadawina (Unfuwain)
16.05 CET Chantilly Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Group 1)
Alain De Royer-Dupre
Alexis Badel

When Harzand came roaring down the Epsom track in the Derby back in June, he ended a 16 year long wait for the Aga Khan to recapture this esteemed prize.

Nothing ever appears to be straightforward with this dual Derby winner, his participation only hours before the Derby was thrown up into the air due to a foot injury but this brave battle hardened colt was patched up and the rest, as they say, is history.

He then duly went on to win the Irish Derby, again battling to victory, but lost his unbeaten run when he finished down the field in the Irish Champion Stakes last month, although one can excuse that run as he was struck into, which resulted in injury and that led to another 'will he or won't he' scenario.

We know now, Harzand will definitely run at Chantilly on Sunday and any concerns or issues anyone has about the ground, fitness or the draw can be stored safely away as everything appears to be in order, even the heavens have opened up at Chantilly as I write, which will be music to Harzand's ears!

There's no denying the fact that this Sea The Stars colt will give another good account of himself in the Arc on Sunday, and his pacemaker Vedevani will ensure a true run race.

Yes, he will have to face some seasoned individuals that are perhaps are little more talented than himself but the beauty of this colt is his robust character, he never knows when to give up, has a heart and courage of a lion, couple that with his ability to stay calm and switch off during the race and you have colt that can overcome any amount of obstacles.
All of which should stand him in good stead as he aims to end his owner's barren spell in this event.

And lets face it, its well overdue!
