Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Edmonton for Aga Khan Garden inauguration

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Edmonton today, accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad, to begin a visit to Canada that will include the inauguration ceremony of the Aga Khan Garden in Edmonton as well as degree conferral ceremonies in Calgary and Vancouver.

Upon his arrival, Hazar Imam was greeted by AKDN Resident Representative for Canada Dr Mahmoud Eboo, President of the Ismaili Council for Canada Malik Talib, Vice-President of the Ismaili Council for Canada Karima Karmali, President of the Ismaili Council for Edmonton Zahra Somani and President of the Aga Khan University Firoz Rasul.

Tomorrow, Mawlana Hazar Imam will join Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Lois Mitchell and Premier of Alberta Rachel Notley at the inauguration ceremony of the Aga Khan Garden, the northernmost Islamic garden in the world, and the first of its kind in western Canada. The 4.8-hectare, Mughal-inspired garden was gifted to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden by Mawlana Hazar Imam in recognition of the close partnership between the University of Alberta and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and serves as a symbol of their continued intellectual, educational, and cultural collaboration.

The Garden is one of a number of significant contributions made by Mawlana Hazar Imam in Canada and joins a network of other permanent investments made by the Ismaili Imamat in the country, including the Aga Khan Museum and Park in Toronto, the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat and Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa, and the Ismaili Centres in Burnaby and Toronto. These enduring gifts are a reflection of the strength of the partnership between the Imamat and Canada — a partnership inspired by shared values and a mutual dedication to the values of pluralism and diversity as enablers of peace and progress.

During his visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam will also attend special ceremonies of three prominent Canadian universities. On 17 October, Hazar Imam will be conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary in recognition of his exceptional contributions to humanity. On 19 October, in a joint ceremony that is the first of its kind, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University will confer Mawlana Hazar Imam with honorary Doctors of Laws degrees for his humanitarian and social contributions.

Mawlana Hazar Imam concludes visit to Canada

Mawlana Hazar Imam departed Vancouver on 20 October, concluding his five-day visit to Canada. Accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad for the duration of his trip, Hazar Imam participated in historic events in three cities in Western Canada.

The visit began in Edmonton at the University of Alberta (U of A), where Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurated the 4.8 hectare Mughal-inspired Aga Khan Garden, Alberta. The northernmost Islamic Garden in the world, U of A President David Turpin praised it as a “magnificent transformative space.” Thanking Mawlana Hazar Imam for the incredible gift, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Lois Mitchell, described it as an “expression of the concepts of peace and cultural understanding.”

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, Mawlana Hazar Imam spoke of the role of gardens in promoting care and concern for the natural environment, saying “a central part of the Garden tradition is the high calling of human stewardship, our responsibility to honour, to protect, and to share the gifts of the natural world.” Hazar Imam continued, “It is our hope and expectation on this special day that the Aga Khan Garden here at the University of Alberta will truly be a gift that keeps on giving.”

The visit continued to Calgary, where Mawlana Hazar Imam was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Calgary — the institution’s highest academic honour — in recognition of his outstanding service to humanity and his “passion to inspire.” University President Dr Elizabeth Cannon referred to Hazar Imam as a “living legend” and commended him for being “instrumental in forging universal ideals and aspirations, promoting pluralism, compassion, cultural amplitude, and human dignity.”

On 19 October, Hazar Imam was conferred with honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University at a joint ceremony, the first of its kind. On the historic occasion, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable Janet Austin thanked Hazar Imam for “his extraordinary leadership and for helping us to make Canada a place of peace and tolerance that is inclusive of all.”
