Theme song for the 2016 Jubilee Games

Jubilee Games Team

14 July 2016

The 2016 Jubilee Games Theme Song embodies the essence of the Jubilee Games for athletes, volunteers and spectators alike: Dream to excel in everything you do; compete to achieve excellence in sports or your passion in life; and pledge to unite as a community sharing common values.

The song is a creative fusion of East and West. It was composed, recorded and sung by talented individuals from India and North America.

The Jubilee Games Organising Team hopes the song will resonate with the global Jamat.

“The song is upbeat and the melody is catchy,” says Sultan Ali, Project Lead for the Jubilee Games. “We really hope that once everyone hears it, they will be as excited about the upcoming Jubilee Games in Dubai as we are!”

The countdown is on!

Also he witnessed a boxing match in Kampala and remarked:

"Yesterday, I visited the magnificent new Aga Khan educational institution. I was shown enough of its work to convince me that this school compared with the finest in the world. One event which I witnessed was a boxing match between two Ismaili boys -- one African, one Asian. I saw a good fight and at the end I think each of them thought he had won. Perhaps both were right!

To me, this friendly contest reflected something of tremendous importance to our community. It reflected first the qualities of determination and endurance which are demanded by our faith. These qualities are also necessary to the future leaders of the community and for the country as a whole."

The message is also appropriate for the forthcoming games in Dubai!

Team Pakistan prepares for Jubilee Games with passion and rigour

Team Pakistan

17 July 2016

With the 2016 Jubilee Games just a few days away, Team Pakistan’s practice sessions are well underway in Karachi, the city of lights. Supported by first-class coaches and experienced managers, the athletes are putting in their best effort to be fit and ready for Dubai.

Apart from representing the top sports talent in the Jamat, Team Pakistan reflects the rich culture and diverse traditions of the country. Most of the professional athletes have had the honour of representing Pakistan in national and international events, and seven of them represented the country in the 2008 Golden Jubilee Games.

From the team’s youngest player, who will compete in volleyball, to the oldest, who is ready to swing his golf clubs, a spirit of sportsmanship fuels the 174 athletes. Supported by a large contingent of spectators and volunteers, they are preparing to make their mark at in Dubai.

The video Believe in Me captures the rigour and passion with which the Pakistani athletes are training for the Games. It is directed and edited by Karim Dossani to a song specially produced and composed by Nizar Lalani with lyrics by Faiz Meghani. It represents the athletes’ dream to achieve and a pledge to give their best:

I dream of home
And pledge my soul
Yes, I’ll achieve
Believe in me

Team Pakistan looks forward to meeting the global Jamat at the Jubilee Games and extends a hand of friendship with best wishes to teams from all the nations participating in the Jubilee Games!

From coast to coast, the Fanous Roadshow makes its mark across Canada

Omar Rawji

17 July 2016

Over the past several weeks, Ismailis across Canada were brought together by the Jubilee Games Fanous, and in a few day’s time over 330 athletes and coaching staff from Canada will take in its glow in Dubai together with their brothers and sisters from around the world.

The Global Fanous Roadshow kindled excitement as it travelled from coast to coast. Children, elders, Jubilee Games participants, and Ismaili and non-Ismaili families — all were able to engage in the Fanous relay, whether by taking pictures with the lantern or cheering on the athletes before their trip to Dubai.

Large crowds gathered at stops in each region, including almost 5,000 people at the Aga Khan Park in Toronto, who took in the relay, cultural performances and introductions to local Team Canada athletes. Those who weren’t able to attend in person watched at their local Jamatkhanas via live webcast.

In a video message recorded at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, Ismaili Council for Canada President Malik Talib offered the national team words of encouragement. He also reminded them to look beyond the competition, to the greater opportunity of strengthening bonds with Ismailis around the world.

“Remember you are playing with your family,” said President Talib. “Bigger than the gold medal will be winning the hearts of our brothers and sisters worldwide.”

TheIsmaili > Speech by Prince Rahim at the Opening Ceremony of...

Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim

Your Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan,

Distinguished leaders from the UAE,

Excellencies and leaders of the Ismaili Muslim community

Athletes, volunteers and staff of the Jubilee Games,

Ladies and Gentlemen:

As-Salaam-Alaikum.

First and foremost, I wish to thank His Highness Sheikh Nahyan for both his patronage of the Jubilee Games, and for having taken the time to travel from Abu Dhabi to be with us today.

Thank you, Your Highness.

I also must express my deepest gratitude to His Highness for encouraging us to hold these games in UAE and for his kind assistance in ensuring that these moments will be memorable for all of us, and particularly for our young athletes who will remember these games and cherish the memories for a very, very long time.

I also wish to thank and express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the UAE, to its ministries, to all governmental and non-governmental institutions, for welcoming us, for their support to us and for doing whatever was necessary to enable us to create this exceptional gathering.

I would like to congratulate everyone who is participating in and helping out in these games, as well as those who participated in and helped to organise the events leading up to them for their collective effort to promote fitness and camaraderie through sports.

In the current times, I can think of no better way than this and of no better place than Dubai to promote the notion of bringing young minds from diverse backgrounds and different environments together in the spirit of friendship and peace. Indeed this is in keeping with the theme of Expo 2020, which will take place here in Dubai in just a few years.

I know the efforts that all you young and able athletes made to come here. I salute your resolve and I pray that you may carry that spirit of friendship and peace with you when you return to your homes.

Finally, I would like to conclude my brief remarks by conveying warmest greetings from my father, His Highness the Aga Khan to His Highness Sheikh Nahyan and to the Government of the UAE, and to all who have enabled these games to take place.

I convey also his very best wishes, to which I add mine, for a most enjoyable and fulfilling week for you all.

Thank you.

Day 1 Sports Highlights

Rizwan Jamil

23 July 2016

The 2016 Jubilee Games opened on Friday morning with matches that had spectators on the edge of their seats.

One of the kick-off events was a men’s football match between Pakistan and Canada that came to a thrilling conclusion. According to those in attendance, Pakistan did a great job of controlling the tempo throughout the match, but at the 90-minute mark, Canada’s Mustakim Samji fired the winning 1-0 shot into the net with his right foot.

“Pakistan played really well,” said Samji, who plays in Ontario back home. “They came out strong and they were really prepared. Gradually we started to get in flow.”

Following the victory, Canada’s captain Thomas Alif looked ahead to their next match against Tanzania. “It's going to be tough as they beat USA 5-0,” said Alif. “We’ve made some adjustments to our strategy and look forward to playing them tomorrow.”

Another Day 1 highlight was the close women’s basketball match between Team USA and Team Tajikistan. Though Tajikistan played well, USA held on and won the match by a score of 50 to 44.

The women at throwball made the crowds stand up on their feet. India won their match over Tanzania White in straight sets 25-20, 25-12. The match between Canada Red and Uganda was a close one with the second set going to extra points. In the end, Uganda prevailed 25-20, 27-25.

In tennis, a men’s singles match between Portugal’s Naser Haji Ali and Canada’s Kahir Rahemtulla had everyone talking. Having won the gold medal at the Golden Jubilee Games, Canada had a lot to prove. Rahemtulla won the match 6-3.

10,000 Ismaili Muslims from more than 25 countries attend Jubilee Games' opening ceremony

Over 2,000 athletes from different parts of the world took part in the opening ceremony of weeklong Jubilee Games, an intra-community global sports event, held in Dubai on Saturday.

Jubilee Games, organised by the Ismaili Muslim community in association with the Dubai Sports Council, was attended by more than 10,000 people from more than 25 countries.

Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, attended the opening ceremony, which was held at Shaikh Rashid Hall, World Trade Centre.

Shaikh Nahyan said: "Everyone hopes to become winners. Although your reason tells you that some people will not win, your heart tells you that you will not be a loser. Let me assure you, both your reason and heart are correct. Winners will be in the minority, but all of you are winners.

"Sports inherently promote that paradox. All participants are winners. They pursue excellence, live by the highest principles, and perform with skill and courage.''

The event was also attended by another guest of honour, Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the eldest son of the Aga Khan IV.

Prince Rahim said: "In the current times, I can think of no better way than this and of no better place than Dubai to promote the notion of bringing young minds from diverse backgrounds together in the spirit of friendship and peace.

"Indeed this is in keeping with the theme of Expo 2020. These moments will be memorable for all of us and particularly for our young athlete," he added.

Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General, Dubai Tourism and Commercial Marketing, said: "Being awarded the honour of hosting the Jubilee Games is recognition of Dubai's stature as a global leading city, built on the fabric of its multi-cultural society, and the city's inherent ability to bring together people, perspectives and passions from all over the world."

Global Village entices visitors at the Jubilee Games

Samreen Khoja

25 July 2016

If the international Ismaili community were to have its own town square, it would most certainly feel like the Global Village — a Jubilee Games hub where visitors can meet one another and experience the music, art and culture of their Ismaili brothers and sisters from around the world.

Located at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the Global Village transforms a cavernous conference hall into a feast for the senses, enticing curious visitors with colours, sounds and bustling activity.

“Looking at people from different Jamats dancing and enjoying our culture makes me feel fulfilled,” says Susan Kabani from the Global Village organising team. The official opening of the space on Friday crystalised many months of planning and hard work into a unifying experience. “It’s the music that brings us together and makes us one.”

The opening kicked off with Oh Weary Traveler, Welcome!, a lively celebration of the sights and sounds of Dubai, host city of the Jubilee Games. Highlights included the United Arab Emirates’ own Tamam Ali and his band, who were followed by an international Ismaili marching band with members from UAE, Pakistan, Qatar and India that was led by Noorallah Noorali. A flash mob of children from the local Emirates Jamat delighted the audience, garnering cheers and bringing people to their feet as they joined in the dance.

Elsewhere, paintings, costumes and handiwork by local artisans from Tajikistan and Cairo were on display and also available for purchase at an exhibition set up by the Aga Khan Development Network. “This booth is setup to explore AKDN through art and culture,” explained Zamila Karim, who designed the exhibition. “All the items on sale here were hand crafted.”

The IllumiNations World Showcase at the Global Village puts national cultures on a stage of their own. It includes a melange of flavours and textures: a spread of delicious French delicacies, a collection of Tajikistan’s traditional attire, the aroma of local spices from the UAE, and delightful handicrafts from India. Another booth displays the journeys of the Jubilee Games fawanees around the world, while the Jubilee Games store sells official clothing and merchandise.

Advertised as a place to “relax and recharge, engage in cultural exchange,” the Global Village also has spaces to sit and share a conversation, an entertainment centre with international board games and video games, and a DJ+Cafe for enjoying light refreshments while listening to a selection of international music. In addition to taking in a packed programme of exhibitions and performances, visitors can sign up for free art and fitness classes, and make new memories at the photo booth. The space also incorporates the Athletes’ Village, a special area that is only open to those completing in the Jubilee Games.
