Curator's Pick: Behind the Scenes of a Museum Rotation

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15orHaf7k0I

In this video we present some of the steps that the Curatorial, Exhibitions and Collections teams take in order to make each of the gallery rotations happen. Parts of the Collection Gallery at the Museum are refreshed twice a year with themed installations which allow light-sensitive material to rest. The current rotation, Bloom, is our ninth display in the Museum’s Collection Gallery and explores representations and meanings of flowers and plants in Islamic art, showcasing several paintings and objects throughout the gallery.

Curator's Pick: A Forest of Tales with Dr. Filiz Çakır Phillip

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x6rRfwmqR0

A lion, a deer, a hero, a dragon, a phoenix, and a cheeky monkey or two — can you spot these characters in the Museum’s Dr. Filiz Çakır Phillip’s latest Curator’s Pick for the #MuseumWithoutWalls?

The drawing, depicting a lively scene in a dense, wildlife-filled forest, was created in Iran in the early 15th century. It tells a tale that harkens back to the oral traditions of the Turkic tribes of the Central Asian steppes, which enriched the artistic repertoire of generations of artists.

Like many of the objects in the Museum’s Collection, Dr. Çakır Phillip’s pick is a beautiful testament to rich, centuries-long dialogues between oral and visual traditions, conversations that have produced many of the most cherished artworks, musical compositions, styles of dance, and works of literature ever created.

To learn more about this object in the Museum's Collection (accession number AKM38): https://www.agakhanmuseum.org/collect...

Pocket Performance: Selcuk Suna Trio

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXcJBz7claQ

Go on a musical adventure to Istanbul with the Selcuk Suna Trio. Like the Turkish metropolis itself, the ensemble’s rich sound pairs diverse, deeply rooted traditions with modern big-city glamour and grandeur.

Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1981, Selcuk comes from a family of musicians. His father, a professor of traditional Turkish music at Istanbul University, and his brother, a violin player and songwriter, brought Selcuk into the music scene at a very young age. In his high school years, Selcuk studied clarinet at the conservatory in Istanbul. He was later granted a full scholarship to study jazz at Bilgi University, Istanbul.

Selcuk has studied saxophone with Ricky Ford and theory with the Butch Morris. He has also played on stage with well-known artists such as Shakira. Selcuk has played saxophone and clarinet for countless albums, television shows, and musicals. Selcuk also participates in vocal recordings and has composed music for the theatre.

Selcuk currently resides in Toronto, Canada, working as a freelance musician.

Production note: This video was filmed in Fall 2020 before the introduction of new provincial COVID-19 orders requiring museums in Toronto to close their doors temporarily. Enhanced health and safety measures were in place to protect the featured artists and speakers, the production crew, and other Museum visitors and staff.

Pocket Performances are presented by TD Bank Group.
