Dhaka, Bangladesh, 16 September 2013 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Dhaka this morning for a two-day official visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of the government. Upon his arrival he was received by the Honourable Foreign Minister, Dr Dipu Moni, the Ambassador at Large from the Prime Minister’s Office, Mohammad Ziauddin and other government officials. Ismaili Council President Rai Sulaiman Ajanee and other Jamati leaders were also present to welcome Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamat of Bangladesh.

During the visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam will hold talks with the Honourable President of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid, the Honourable Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, and other senior government officials. He is also expected to sign a Protocol of Cooperation between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

Mawlana Hazar Imam will also meet with the Jamat at the recently opened Ismali Jamatkhana and Centre, for which he laid the Foundation during his Golden Jubilee visit to Bangladesh.

Aga Khan arrives in Dhaka

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, arrived in Dhaka on Monday morning on a two-day visit.


Foreign minister Dipu Moni received him at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival by private a jet to a red carpet reception.

From there, he will go to the National Memorial in Savar to pay respects to the Liberation War heroes, a foreign ministry official says.

The Aga Khan is also the founder and Chairperson of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the largest private development groups in the world.

This is his first visit during this government’s tenure. The last time he visited Bangladesh was in 2008 at the invitation of the then Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed. It was also part of the celebrations of his 50th anniversary as the hereditary and spiritual leader.

During his visit, he is expected to meet President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Moni.

After his meeting with the Prime Minister, the Aga Khan Development Network will sign an agreement with Bangladesh government at around 6pm on expanding its operations.

In Bangladesh, the Aga Khan Foundation works with NGOs working in different fields, mainly in rural development, microfinance and education since 1980.

He will also visit the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondhi and spend time with the people of his community in Dhaka.

The Prime Minister will host a dinner in his honour on Monday.

Aga Khan became the Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan.

He will leave Dhaka on Tuesday noon.

Govt in deal with Aga Khan network

The government has signed a protocol with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to expand cooperation with one of the world’s largest private development groups.

The visiting Chairperson of the network Prince Karim Aga Khan, also the spiritual leader of the 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni singed the protocol at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the protocol would enable the Network to operate in Bangladesh with its 10 wings, nine of which are not-for-profit.

Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Health Services, Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, Aga Khan Education Services, Aga Khan Academies, Aga Khan University, The University of Central Asia, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance, and Focus Humanitarian Assistance are the non-profit wings.

Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development is a profitable venture.

The Network has been working in Bangladesh with different NGOs since 1980.

Aga Khan arrived in Dhaka on Monday morning on a two-day visit on the government’s invitation and met with the President, Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Foreign Minister after paying respects to the Liberation War heroes at the National Memorial in Savar.

He also placed wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.

The Foreign Minister received him at the airport.

During his meeting with the President at Bangabhaban, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a media release said, the issues of mutual interest were discussed, particularly on Aga Khan Network’s engagement in the areas of higher education, vocational and technical education, health, and agriculture.

The Prime Minister at her meeting with the prince expressed the hope that his academic institutions would offer “science-centric, technology-based education to young Bangladeshi minds – for them to serve emerging local and global markets”.

He will leave Dhaka on Tuesday noon.

The Bangladesh government and Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) signed a protocol of cooperation Monday for development in different fields including education, health, economy and environment, reports UNB.

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni and visiting AKDN Chairman Prince Karim Aga Khan signed the protocol for their respective sides at the Prime Minister's Office.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina witnessed the signing of the protocol.

Under the protocol, the AKDN will work for the development of health, education, economy and environment through its 10 organisations.

The AKDN will invest in the fields of tourism, health, technical education and other service sectors in phases mainly to help meet the internal demand of Bangladesh.

Ambassador at Large M Ziauddin, PM's Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Principal Secretary Shaikh Md Wahid-Uz-Zaman, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque and Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were, among others, present.

Earlier, Prince Karim Aga Khan made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the PMO.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, the PM's press secretary informed that Prince Karim Aga Khan told the Prime Minister that his organisation will provide assistance in education sector, higher education for nurses, and the development of jute sector.

The Aga Khan also praised Bangladesh's tremendous development in different sectors including health, education, social safety net and women empowerment under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Sheikh Hasina appreciated the commendable work of Prince Karim Aga Khan on social, economic and cultural development across Africa, Middle East, and Central and South Asia.

She also praised his leadership and dedication to the well-being of the Muslims, and helping them to overcome the challenges of tumultuous historical changes.

Hasina said the Aga Khan's organisation (AKDN) should avail the excellent investment opportunities that Bangladesh offers to potential investors, especially in the fields of ICT, agro-processing industries and other related fields.

During the meeting at Bangabhaban, the President appreciated the commendable work of the AKDN in various fields, including social, economic and cultural development, in many countries.

President Hamid recognised the contributions of AKDN to Bangladesh’s fields of education, healthcare and microfinance, and emphasised cooperation in medical field and other private sectors.

Hamid briefed Prince Karim Aga Khan about the nature of haor area from where the President hails, and invited Aga Khan to visit the area next time.

Shukar! Imam graced his presence in Bashundhara Jamatkhana hall in Dhaka right at 12.00 noon on Tuesday, Sept 17. It was very special; very small jamat (420) so it felt very intimate sitting with Hazar Imam in the same prayer hall that we sit in every evening - except this time he was physically there:)

Imam asked us to convey His message to our families and Jamats - Best Blessings for all Ruhani, to all our families not present, and to all our Jamats.... Ameen. Please pass on discreetly to family/Canadian Jamati members who you reach in person. Mubaraki to you all!

Imam expressed his gratitude to Bangladesh Govt for inviting him and said that he had signed a protocol of cooperation whereby there would be AKDN activities in education, health, social, economic... over the next few years. Imam sees opportunity in BD. Inshallah, Imam will release his firmans soon and you will hear detail conveyed to Bangladesh Jamat.

Imam conducted dharmic kriya in mehmani, mahdan, etc. It was all very nice and we truly felt like we were sitting with our Imam who was guiding us spiritually. You were all in our hearts and minds. This was the best moment of our TKN; shukar!
