Yayasan MENDAKI (Council for the Development of Singapore Malay/Muslim Community) is a pioneer Self-Help Group formed in 1982 dedicated to empower the community through excellence in education, in the context of a multi-racial and multi-religious Singapore. MENDAKI works extensively with partners who share and support its vision and mission. MENDAKI’s programmes are mostly preventive and developmental, to provide early assistance to the students so that they become school-ready and productive citizens in the future.
At recent Mendaki’s 35th anniversary fund-raising dinner on 14 November 2017, first female President of the Republic of Singapore, President Halimah Yacob presented both Professor Aziz Merchant and Dr Reshma Merchant with a ‘Partner of Mendaki’ award for their support to the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore and for their volunteer and philanthropic work.

Not long after Ugandan leader Idi Amin came to power in 1971, he said he had a dream that Allah had told him to expel people of Asian descent from the country. Many of them were Ismailis.
The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Nizari Ismaili branch of Islam represents about 15 million people and advocates tolerance and pluralism. When Amin's decree came, the Aga Khan called then prime minister Pierre Trudeau asking him to help. More than 7 000 Ugandan Asians came to Canada. It was the first time in Canadian history that Canada accepted a large group of non-European refugees.

Ontario has appointed four new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice effective March 7, 2018.
Justice Hafeez Shahbudin Amarshi was called to the bar in 2002. He has worked as a criminal defense lawyer, and most recently, as Crown counsel for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. Justice Amarshi also served on the Board of Directors for Flemingdon Community Legal Services and in 2012 was a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, which recognizes contributions to Canadian citizenship and public service.
Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve has assigned Justice Amarshi to preside in Brampton.

The prestigious national honour recognizes Dr. Dosani for being a trailblazer in providing mobile end-of-life care for the homeless and those with unreliable housing.
Founder and team leader of Toronto-based Palliative Education and Care for the Homeless (PEACH), he treats an often neglected population with dignity and compassion, whether in a shelter or on the street. A first in Canada, the model of care has inspired similar programs in Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria and Seattle.
In our region, Dr. Dosani's work includes researching the impact of immigration and culture on the perception of palliative care among the South Asian community.

She is currently Deputy Chairperson of the Association "Women for Women in Stolberg", is involved in refugee aid and was a member of the "Stolberg Foreigners' Advisory Council" years ago, which corresponds to today's Integration Council. In February, she and thirty women from different countries travel by train to Düsseldorf, where they visit the state parliament.

When she was 23 years old, Mobina Jaffer was forced into exile from Uganda and became a refugee. Decades later she returned to her first home as a senator of her second home. Since 2001 Mobina Jaffer has represented the province of British Columbia in the Canadian Senate. She is also the Senate’s first Muslim, first African-born and first senator of South Asian descent.
Since her appointment in 2001, she has been a steadfast champion of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, often a reminder to the world that in 2000 Canada had been a leading voice in the UN Security Council and a pioneer on the global stage.
To commemorate International Women’s Day, ICAN’s Peace Heroes series honors Senator Jaffer, whose life and career capture the spirit and essence of the day. Journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown gives a personal account of her life in the country where she was born and calls for a more honest assessment of what actually took place before, during and after the turbulent years of General Amin's regime. The romantic story of the all-conquering Asian families being thrown out of Uganda on the whim of a an evil dictator was not all that it seemed. The mass murder of Amin's own people is largely forgotten. One of the reasons Amin gave for the expulsion was that Ugandan Asians had consistently exploited the local economy and refused to integrate with black African people- after decades of living in the country. And according to Yasmin, this is the uncomfortable truth. East African Asians were part of the British Empire and loyal to it. Even after Uganda gained independence on October 9, 1962, Asians were slow to change their ways and embrace the new order. Many continued to hold racist views about black Ugandans and were racist towards them. But hundreds of thousands of black Ugandans were killed by Amin too or were forced into exile. Only a handful of Asians were ever killed. Yasmin returns to Uganda to gauge the extent to which black suffering has been disregarded by history, and talks to those who witnessed it and the descendants of those who lost their lives. The programme examines the reaction of native Ugandans to the expulsion, the relationship between Asians and black Ugandans before the expulsion, what happened after the Asians left and after Amin's regime fell.

Sameer Hirji, MD, the Safra Research Fellow in the Division of Cardiac Surgery and a resident in the Department of Surgery, was recognized for his outstanding research by the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS) Foundation and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Hirji received the prestigious John W. Kirklin Resident Research Award from AATS Foundation for his project, “Utility and Feasibility of Intra- and Postoperative Crisis Management Checklists in Cardiac Surgery.”
Through a collaboration between the BWH Neil and Elise Wallace STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation and the Veterans Health Administration, Hirji and his colleagues demonstrated the unmet need for intraoperative and postoperative crisis-management tools in order for cardiac surgeons to recognize preventable errors in a timely fashion. The team also developed a checklist app that provides a standardized protocol to help improve cognitive performance during adverse events.
Established in 1973, the AATS Foundation works to achieve a dynamic and innovative future of continued excellence for cardiothoracic surgery. It is the philanthropic arm of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons.

Voters in Euless have rejected the hurtful and counter-productive race-baiting that swirled around the city council candidacy of 38-year-old attorney Salman Bhojani.
Now, as Bhojani prepares to be sworn in, the citizens of Euless need to demand that the divisive insinuations stop.

The documentary ‘Beyond Borders’ is a true story of families who migrated to Montreal Quebec to save their lives from their own home countries. The families migrated because their states were in conflict, wars were taking place and people were dying because of the extremism.
This documentary breaks down the narratives of the families who suffered and were asked to leave their homes and be STATELESS. Canada Government welcomed them with open arms 70's 90's and now in 2017-18. Canada became a new home for them. The time move on but the dedication of institutions are still same. The community they belong to provided them support and space to keep up their livelihoods. The community institutions and the Leader invested into their lives and granted them with a better and certain future. In this documentary the families share their stories about struggles and hardships during their early migration days. This documentary climaxes the idea of diversity, acceptance, love and compassion of people within the global community.
The main crux of this documentary is ‘One Jamat’ coming together as one strong community and helping each other when in need.

The quiet hotel powerhouse

Brothers Mahmood and Mehdi Khimji — the company’s founders — have made $500 million-plus NYC hotel acquisitions in the past year with a rotating cast of partners. According to real estate data firm Real Capital Analytics, the company dropped about $1 billion nationally on hotel acquisitions during that same time.
Between December 2016 and December 2017 alone, the firm bought the 600-plus-room Affinia Manhattan on Seventh Avenue in the 30s, the Royalton New York on West 44th Street, the Nyma on West 32nd and the Gansevoort Park Avenue.
The under-the-radar company is indisputably the most active hotel buyer in Manhattan today.

Ms. Rumina Velshi appointed new CNSC President and CEO / Madame Rumina Velshi nommée nouvelle présidente et première dirigeante de la CCSN
It is my pleasure to inform you that, following a rigorous appointment process, Ms. Rumina Velshi has been appointed by the Governor in Council as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, for a five-year term effective August 23, 2018.
We are all very familiar with Ms. Velshi. She was first appointed as a Commission member in 2011 and was re-appointed for a second five-year term in March of this year.
Ms. Velshi brings extensive technical, regulatory and adjudication expertise in the area of energy. She has had a long career working in various capacities at Ontario Hydro and Ontario Power Generation where, in her last role, she was Director, Planning and Control for the Darlington New Nuclear Project. Ms. Velshi currently serves as a part-time Board member on the Ontario Energy Board, the economic regulator of the province of Ontario’s electricity and natural gas sectors.
Ms. Velshi is very active in the promotion of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), especially for young women. She was one of the founding members of Canada’s Women in Science and Engineering and, until recently, served as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors of Scientists in School – a non-profit organization that in 2017 alone provided STEM-focused workshops to almost 700,000 students. She is the recipient of the 2011 Women in Nuclear (WiN) Canada Leadership Award.
Ms. Velshi was one of 150 Canadian women to have their stories compiled in “Your Turn”, a book to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary and inspire the next generation of women leaders.
Ms. Velshi is also very active in international development activities. She is the founding member of Focus Humanitarian Assistance Canada, an internationally recognized humanitarian assistance agency. She served as the Aga Khan Foundation Canada's City Chair for Toronto for the World Partnership Events, Canada's largest annual event dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight global poverty.
Ms. Velshi holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Civil Engineering), a Master of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) and a Master of Business Administration – all from the University of Toronto.
Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, will act as Chief Operating Officer from August 8th until Ms. Velshi’s official start date of August 23rd.

Sayed Anwar: Talented young Afghan-Ismaili student receives recognition from the government
Sayed Anwar received the title of powerful youths of Afghanistan from the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan. The first in Afghanistan, where Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Doctor Kamal Sadat is appreciating the top 100 creative and powerful youths who worked hard and have many achievements. Sayed Anwar has completed his bachelor in business administration from Osmania University India, and have returned back to his country.
