The small Kildare town of Kilcullen is to be essentially shut down for one of Queen Elizabeth’s private engagements. She is visiting the Aga Khan Gilltown stud where she is to be presented with a gift from Prince Karim Al Husseini, the fourth Aga Khan.

Up to fifty gardai will be on duty in the town for the visit on Thursday 19 May, some taking up positions in houses and retail units beside the route she will travel. The town is to be closed to all vehicles from 9.30am on the day until after 4.30pm, with parking on the main street stopped at 6pm the night before.

Traders in the town have been asked to reschedule any deliveries they may have had on the day. Many of them are not happy with the arrangements, saying the meeting with Superintendent Pat Mangan and Inspector Paul Dolan was very sudden. Others have commented on loss of business. ScreenShot015

Barriers are to be erected along the route, coming from the Athgarvan Road through the town, which, Superintendent Mangan said, locals would be very welcome to stand behind and watch the event pass through.

"We will also use common sense to facilitate local people going about their business," he said, "but once the Queen moves, we will be firm on security issues."

On a more positive note, roads outside of the town on the Queen’s route have been resurfaced especially for the visit by the County Council, something the locals are happy about.

It is understood that after her visit to the stud, the Queen will be taken back to Dublin via the motorway.

Gilltown and the adjoining Sallymount stud cover approximately 1500 acres in total, has a beautiful 16 acre lake and an Oak tree avenue. Two large bronze statues by David Wynne also feature on the public stud, one of Sinndar and the other of Shergar, the horse famously stolen from Ballymany Stud in 1983.

It is home to famous racehorses Azamour, Dalakhani and Sea the Stars, the great Irish flat winner of 2009, who it is said the Queen is eager to see.

When Queen was offered horse sperm as gift

In her nearly six decades on the throne, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has received numerous gifts but none as unusual as the one proffered on Thursday when a racehorse breeder felt the monarch might like free horse sperm shot worth 8,615 dollars.

French woman Cristina Patino, owner of last year's Epsom Oaks winner Snow Fairy, offered for one of the Queen's mares the free services of her male horse Big Bad Bob, the Daily Express reported on Friday.

Big Bad Bob, an 11-year-old who fathered 14 winners, is based at the Irish National Stud, which the queen visited on Thursday during her four-day State visit to Ireland.

She was shown around by stud chairwoman Lady O'Reilly, wife of business magnate Tony O'Reilly. Talking animatedly about her favourite hobby, the queen cast an expert eye over stallions at the stud.
