WEBCAST: Book launch of Mohamed Keshavjee’s “Into that Heaven of Freedom”

This webcast has now concluded. Thank you for joining us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On 14 January 2016, the Ismaili Centre, London hosted a book launch of Mohamed Keshavjee’s Into that Heaven of Freedom: The impact on Apartheid on an Indian family’s diasporic history featuring the author and Edward Mortimer (CMG, Hon. DLitt.), Distinguished Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford.

This book captures the history of the South African Ismaili families and some of the people among whom they lived from 1894, when Jeevan Keshavjee left Kathiawad (Gujarat) and arrived in South Africa, up to 1994, when the country attained its multiparty democracy following the release of Nelson Mandela. Following the stories of a single family over several generations, the book covers apartheid in South Africa, the colonial and postcolonial periods and the history of the Asians of Africa over a hundred years.

The book lecture was organised by The Institute of Ismaili Studies and the Ismaili Council for the United Kingdom

Nick Boles talks about new UK living wage policy at Ismaili Centre, London

London, 13 January, 2016 — Nick Boles MP, Minister of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, attended a reception and talk at the Ismaili Centre in London to discuss the new National Living Wage and why it is good for business and the economy.

Announced last year by the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, the National Living Wage is a key new policy being introduced by the British Government that is set to take effect from April 2016. It introduces a progressive, compulsory premium over the national minimum hourly wage for all people over the age of 25 and is intended to ensure that low-wage workers can earn a sufficient and decent wage to live on.

“I value this opportunity to meet a diverse group of business leaders at the Ismaili Centre, London and discuss the National Living Wage,” said the Minister of State. “Members of the Ismaili community play an important role in the growth of the economy, employing thousands of people.”

The discussion addressed a number of key aspects relating to the new policy, including its likely impact on businesses at large but also certain specific sectors relevant to members of the United Kingdom Jamat such as care homes, restaurants, hotels and retail, as well as more generally its impact on the UK economy, inflation, unemployment and immigration.

“As a community, we remain committed to debating current affairs which impact society,” said Liakat Hasham, President of the Ismaili Council for the UK. “Whilst the Ismaili business community recognises and supports improved quality of life for workers, we also recognise the need for a trained workforce and look forward to the Government extending training grants to employers in line with the introduction of the living wage.”

Higher education to reverse risk of marginalisation in high mountain communities, says Shamsh Kassim-Lakha

VIDEO at:
https://www.theismaili.org/ismailicentr ... ation-high

Shamsh Kassim-Lakha delivered a talk at the Ismaili Centre, London in which he emphasised the strategic importance of the Central Asian region in a globalised world.

The Executive Chairman of the University of Central Asia Board Executive Committee and Aga Khan Development Network Diplomatic Representative to the Kyrgyz Republic discussed economic opportunities and quality of life issues prevalent among high mountain populations in the region.

“There is resilience and initiative within mountain communities,” said Kassim-Lakha. He described “an inverse ratio between the height of the mountain and the economic status of those who inhabit it,” noting, “the higher the mountain, the lower the economic status.”

“Education bridges the divide,” he said. “We want to give communities the opportunity to reverse this risk of marginalisation through higher education.”

The University of Central Asia was founded in 2000 by the Presidents of Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan and Mawlana Hazar Imam. It will welcome the inaugural class of undergraduates to Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic in September 2016. UCA is building three campuses of equal facility and standards in Naryn; Khorog, Tajikistan and Tekeli, Kazakhstan.

Titled Creating Opportunity on the Roof of the World, his talk on 20 May 2016 was part of the Aga Khan Foundation UK’s Breaking the Cycle of Poverty lecture series, and presented in conjunction with the Ismaili Council for the United Kingdom.

His Excellency Robin Ord-Smith, British Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic and past Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan, delivered opening remarks before an audience, which included representatives from government, the diplomatic corps, media, and the donor community. The Ambassador, who visited the Naryn Campus in February 2016, praised the University, calling it “a great, visionary, and extraordinarily important project” that the region needs.

An open discussion and audience question and answer session followed the talk, led by Gulnara Kasmambetova, Senior Producer with the BBC Kyrgyz Television, Radio and Online services. A BBC news documentary, produced after an earlier visit to the Naryn campus by the BBC Kyrgyz team, was also premiered before the Ismaili Centre audience.

Kyrgyz Government Delegation meets with AKDN institutions during visit to London

Photo at the Ismaili Centre London:
http://www.akdn.org/news/kyrgyz-governm ... sit-london

London, United Kingdom, 28 May 2016 - A senior delegation from the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic today concluded a four day visit to the United Kingdom focused on multi-dimensional aspects of secular and religious education.

Headed by Mr. Orozbek Moldaliev, Director of the State Commission on Religious Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic (SCRA), the nine member delegation comprised the Deputy Minister of Education, the Rector of the Kyrgyz State University (Arabaev University), the Head of Religious Education Department representing the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SCRA. Mr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, Diplomatic Representative of the AKDN in the Kyrgyz Republic and Executive Chairman of the Board Executive Committee, University of Central Asia accompanied the delegation.

Encompassing exchanges with scholars, researchers, teachers and curators, the delegation's programme covered visits to the Cambridge Muslim College, the British Museum and the BBC's studios at Broadcasting House in London.

The delegation also exchanged views with experts from the School of Oriental and African Studies and University College, London's Institute of Education, the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and the Institute of Ismaili Studies. Discussions spanned a wide range of topics comprising the transmission of cultural values to pedagogy, curriculum development and the training of educators including for religious education. Of particular interest to the delegation were pioneering multidisciplinary and civilizational approaches to educating the educators and youth.

In a meeting with the delegation, His Highness the Aga Khan underlined the importance of good quality education for improving the quality of life of marginalised populations, including mountain societies in some of the remotest parts of Central Asia. This was the motivating principle behind the establishment of the University of Central Asia, a regional institution founded by the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and the Aga Khan Development Network. He also reiterated a compelling need to make the significant contributions of Muslim philosophers intrinsic to curricula in educational institutions the world over. This would enhance knowledge and understanding of Muslim civilizations across peoples of different cultures.

Ambassador Gulnara Iskakova received the delegation at the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in London.

“The delegation’s interaction with experts and exposure to successful models of secular and religious education for the plurality of Muslim populations in the United Kingdom has allowed us to explore opportunities for adapting some of these in the Kyrgyz Republic while respecting our own religious and cultural values as they address contemporary challenges”, observed Mr. Moldaliev.

The Shi‘i World: Pathways in Tradition and Modernity, the fourth book in the Muslim Heritage Series, has been published by The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS). Fresh insights into the multi-faceted world of Shi‘ainfo-icon Islam, past and present, fill the sixteen chapters of this new publication. They showcase Shi‘i beliefs, practices and traditions in all their diversity through history, including their manifestations in art and architecture, music, cinema, literature, law and theology, and intellectual life. This work seeks to elucidate what is meant by Shi‘i identity and how ordinary women and men experience those various aspects of Shi‘isminfo-icon as individuals and members of communities, not only in their ‘traditional’ contexts in the Middle East and Asia, but also in the global diaspora.

Dr Farhad Daftary

Dr Farhad Daftary completed his early and secondary education in Tehran, Rome, and London, before going to Washington, D.C., in 1958. Subsequently, Dr Daftary held different teaching posts, and, since 1988, he has been affiliated with The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London, where he is currently Director and Head (since 1992) of the Department of Academic Research and Publications.

An authority in Shi'i studies, with special reference to its Ismaili tradition, Dr. Daftary has published and lectured widely in these fields of Islamic studies. He has written more than 200 articles and encyclopedia entries and several acclaimed books, including A Short History of the Ismailis and The Assassin Legends.
.

Shakespeare’s influence on diverse cultures will be depicted by Swahili poet and writer, Dr Farouk Topan who will speak on the impact Shakespeare has had on Swahili literature, on Friday (Sept 16). This will be followed by readings of poems by young poets from across the world, called ‘Bards without Borders’, whose poems have been inspired by Shakespeare’s plays and poetry. Ismaili Centre invites public to immerse themselves in musical and cultural riches

VIDEO at:

Safiya Ahmed

31 October 2016

Over the next several days, ordinary Londoners can step out of their busy work days and slip into the serenity of the Ismaili Centre, to be whisked away by the sounds of MUSIC@ONE — inspired by the Silk Road.

Circling the fountain within the geometric embrace of the lobby, musicians from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa will bring to life a range of compositions on traditional and contemporary instruments. The lunchtime musical interludes, which start at 1:00 PM each day, are part of the seventh annual Nour Festival of Arts, taking place in venues across the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea this autumn.

“This is such a wonderful way to spend a lunchtime,” says Shafin Jivraj, a visitor to Music@One (link sends e-mail). “It's so rejuvenating to tune out the outside world and tune in to some relaxing music, whilst at the same time experiencing differing cultures.”

The rich musical journey across Asia features performances by Nash Meghji, who will treat the audience to traditional performances on the sitar, and Duri Lalani on the rubab, a lute-like musical instrument originating from central Afghanistan.

Tara Jaff, an Iraqi Kurdish musician will perform on the Celtic harp, bringing a contemporary expression to an ancient form of music and song. Jaff has performed widely mainly as a solo artist and collaborated with a wide range of artists including film-makers, poets and painters.

Olcay Bayir, an impressive artist on London’s global music scene, will perform traditional music from the western borders of Asia and the Mediterranean coast, including Albanian, Armenian, Balkan, and Kurdish songs.

The week will close with a music and dance performance by the London Uyghur Ensemble — a United Kingdom-based troup dedicated to the traditional and popular music of the Turkic ethnic community of Central Asia. The ensemble made their debut at the London South Bank Sanctuary festival for refugee music in 2005. Performances of the maqām traditions of the Islamic world with its distinctive rhythms and ecstatic poetry, is deeply imbued with the Sufi ethos.

The Ismaili Centre has been a partner in the Nour Festival for several years. Illuminating the best in contemporary Middle Eastern and North African arts and culture, the annual festival transports local, national and international visitors on an unforgettable journey, providing insights into the diverse makeup of the Middle East and North Africa today. While non-political and non-religious in nature, the Nour Festival recognises that both can inspire great art and challenging stereotypes about the region and its peoples through cultural expression.

This year, the festival comprises 84 individual performances over more than 40 events held across 16 venues with 28 partners. Artists from 15 countries are presenting visual arts, music, poetry, theatre, film, dance, and literature. The events in the Nour Festival programme are accompanied by a broad and engaging Creative Learning Programme, featuring a series of exciting projects and activities with local community groups and schools: from fan design to kite-making, Arabic typography to the Arabian Nights.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUSIC@ONE continues at the Ismaili Centre, London from Monday, 31 October to Friday, 4 November, 1:00 – 1:45 PM. Doors open at 12:45.

The Fatimids: The Rise of a Muslim Empire

The Ismaili Centre, London, in collaboration with the Institute of Ismaili Studies will host a conversation with Dr Shainool Jiwa, the author, with Mahmood Ahmed about her new publication. The event is due to begin at 8:15pm BST on Thursday 26 April and will be webcast live at http://the.ismaili/live

How much do you know about the Fatimids?

Join us for an exploration of the Institute’s new “easy to read” book on the Fatimids and travel through an exciting and eye-opening period of Ismaili history.

This publication is the first book in the IIS’ new World of Islam series. Dr Shainool Jiwa, the author, will engage in an on-stage conversation with Mahmood Ahmed about her new publication and respond to questions from the audience.

Emerging from a period of long seclusion, in the year 909 the leader of the burgeoning community of lsmaili Shi’i Muslims was declared the first Fatimid Imam-caliph. Abd Allah al-Mahdi founded the only sustained Shi’i dynasty [909-1171] to rule over substantial parts of the medieval Muslim world, rivalling both the Umayyads of Spain and the Abbasids. At its peak, the Fatimid Empire extended from the Atlantic shores of North Africa, across the southern Mediterranean and down both sides of the Red Sea, covering also Mecca and Medina.

This accessible history, the first of two volumes, tells the story of the birth and expansion of the Fatimid Empire in the 10th century. Drawing upon recently available eyewitness accounts, Shainool Jiwa introduces the first four generations of Fatimid Imam-caliphs -al-Mahdi, al-Qa’im, al-Mansur, and al Mu’izz - as well as the people who served them and those they struggled against. Readers are taken on a journey through the Fatimid capitals of Qayrawan, Mahdiyya, and Mansuriyya and on to the founding of Cairo. In this lively and comprehensive introduction, we discover various milestones in Fatimid history and the political and cultural achievements that continue to resonate today.

Dr Shainool Jiwa is a senior faculty member at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. As a specialist on the Fatimids, she has written and lectured extensively on medieval Islamic history and has edited and translated key medieval Arabic texts relating to Fatimid history.

Mahmood Ahmed, a practicing lawyer, is currently Chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation UK National Committee. He previously served as President for the Ismaili Council for the UK, and the Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Uganda.
