Wide-ranging survey highlights alumni impact

AKU alumni have had their say: over 3,500 spanning all the University’s academic programmes and campuses responded to a survey sent out by the Alumni Affairs Office.

Key findings from the survey have been captured in a report available to all alumni on the web. It represents the most comprehensive effort to date to understand our alumni’s experience at AKU, their continued involvement with the university as well as their achievements.

What we found is:

Over three-quarter, 86 per cent of those who responded, rated their programme as being very good or excellent.
The majority of alumni in the survey viewed their time at the University as being fulfilling and professionally rewarding with 85 per cent saying that their degrees were relevant to their career goals.
Alumni also reported that their qualifications enabled them to make an impact. Nearly half, 48 per cent, reported holding leadership positions such as CEO, chief of nursing, head teacher or executive director; while a third of all respondents have received awards for their contribution to their respective fields.
Over half of all alumni asserted that they honed their leadership and communication skills during their studies.
“AKU equipped me with [the] excellent knowledge, confidence and patience that enabled me to see that I can work anywhere, from rural, urban and international institutions,” a graduate of the 2014 master’s programme at the Institute of Educational Development said.

One of our nursing alumni from the class of 2010 added “I feel that being an AKU graduate is the most valuable thing that I have done (twice).”

Enhancing dental education

A one-of-a-kind, high-fidelity dental simulation lab that promises a safer and more effective way to educate dental professionals and students was inaugurated at the Aga Khan University (AKU) on August 30, 2017.UNI EVENTS

At AKU’s newly launched facility, 17 state-of-the-art ‘phantom heads’ - patient mannequins - are available, specially designed to mimic the challenges of a real-life clinical environment. Each mannequin contains the full range of dental instruments, tools such as air and water suction, and computer-based feedback facilities needed to help students and practicing dentists improve their skills.

“You may have the knowledge, but you have to develop the hand-eye coordination, the motor skills and judgment associated with basic and advanced dentistry procedures,” says Dr. Farhan Raza Khan, Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry at AKU. “A simulation lab offers an environment where you can practice, practice, practice until you are ready to treat a patient as a person, rather than worry only about their teeth.”

Unlike on-the-job-training in a clinic, the lab also offers the opportunity to learn from experts around the world. “We offer a ‘global’ classroom, with teaching and learning sessions offered by specialist dentists from anywhere in the world in real time, supported by our advanced videoconferencing facilities. This really does makes us a one-of-a-kind lab in Pakistan,” said Dr. Mubassar Fida, Associate Professor of Orthodontics at AKU.

The university initially plans to begin using the facility to educate students pursuing a two-year Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene as well as residents undergoing specialised four-year programmes in operative dentistry and orthodontics. It will also be available to students from dental schools across the country and practicing professionals interested in continuing professional education in dentistry.

The Study of Islam in an Age of Trump: Notes from the Field
by Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations

DESCRIPTION

The Study of Islam has always been, protestations to the contrary, a politically fraught field. If Orientalism defined previous generations of scholarship, a recent paradigm shift has moved to Cosmopolitanism. The election of Trump to the U.S. Presidency in 2016 has exacerbated, among other things, the place and role of Muslims in the United States, just as it has provoked a set of responses among scholars of Islam. This lecture charts some of the repercussions of a Trump presidency on the academic study of Islam and examines that field’s responses to it, both positive and negative.

Islamic Banking and Finance: a Novel and Increasingly Significant Expression of faith...
by Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations

DESCRIPTION
A neglected feature of contemporary Muslim life, society and culture, banking and financial services compatible with Islamic law represents a global industry of growing importance. This lecture comprises an introduction to the history, sources, principles and practices of this industry. It distinguishes Islamic banking and finance law from its conventional counterpart by comparing, for example, conventional bank accounts with Islamic bank accounts, and conventional bonds with ‘Islamic bonds’ (sukuk). It surveys the reception and advance of ‘Shari’a compliance’ and its governance in modern Islamic financial institutions both in Muslim majority and minority societies alike -- including prominently the United Kingdom.

‘About time parents took note of children’s sexual abuse complaints’

As cases of child sexual abuse reach a record high in Pakistan, a panel discussion, held at the Aga Khan University Hospital on Tuesday, brought to fore the role elders, especially parents, need to play in raising children’s awareness about the crime.

Before the discussion commenced, a documentary narrating the ordeal of a child abuse survivor who opens up about the trauma was also shown at the event. Tehmina Shahid, Children Empowerment Association of Pakistan CEO, who was also behind the making of the documentary, said speaking to children about their bodies may save them from falling prey to abusers.

“It’s disheartening to see schools’ management not cooperating when it comes to organising awareness sessions. Even parents hesitate to speak about it — if we try to reach out to a thousand people, perhaps 20 would actually be interested,” she said.

Persian Documents from Pre-Mongol Bāmiyān
by Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations

DESCRIPTION
Several years ago, a trove of manuscripts was discovered in central Afghanistan, part of which explicitly dated to the early 5th/11th century and to the several decades before the Mongol invasion of Iran (early 7th/13th century). This trove is quite diverse and contains texts of different genres (legal documents, letters, ledgers, poetry, prose, exegesis, etc.) written in six languages (Persian, Judeo-Persian, Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, Hebrew and Aramaic). Despite the range in genre, date and language, it seems that most of these texts originate in the Bāmiyān valley, making them a unique source for the history of this area and its adjacent regions during the pre-Mongol period.
In the talk, Ofir Haim will offer an overview of the different kinds of documents. A special emphasis will be given to the documentary material written in Persian and in Judeo-Persian, which sheds light on the economic activity of the inhabitants of the Bāmiyān valley, as well as on the administrative norms and practices of its ruling powers.

Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurates Centre for Innovation at AKU

Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurated the Aga Khan University (AKU) Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME), a state-of-the-art facility for technology-based learning for health professionals, on 15 December.

In his inaugural address, Mawlana Hazar Imam acknowledged the many contributions made towards the advancement of healthcare in the country stating that civil society was underserved in education in Pakistan. Expressing his gratitude to all those who had sustained the University, he said, “we should position this institution in its correct place in service to Pakistan.”

CIME’s mission is to transform the education of health professionals through the use of simulation and virtual reality technology to develop knowledge and skills before treating patients.

“The Centre aims to raise the bar for teaching and learning and to thereby deliver higher standards of practice across the professions of medicine, nursing and allied health,” said CIME Director Dr Charles Docherty. “We seek to become a strategic asset for Pakistan and the region that is at the forefront of efforts to raise the standard of healthcare.”

The Centre offers multi-purpose teaching spaces, high-fidelity simulators, and specialty environments such as the phantom-head dental lab, a cardiac catheterisation lab and telemedicine clinics.

Learning from other such centres around the world, CIME supports student-centred, problem-based, and team-based learning. Students and professionals from different disciplines work together on real-life patient simulations. For example, nurses and doctors can practice responding to a situation in which a patient stops breathing, using a high-tech mannequin that responds as a real patient would respond. Afterwards, they can watch a video of themselves and analyse their performance.

High-speed communications technology allows video connectivity throughout CIME and with international experts, offering a truly ‘global classroom’, with students able to learn from specialists anywhere in the world in real-time. This same connectivity allows CIME to work with remote and rural populations within Pakistan and neighbouring countries to expand access to quality healthcare.

“In everything we do, as our Chancellor says, ‘we must look to the future, seeking always to think creatively, to innovate and to improve,’” said AKU President Firoz Rasul. “Technology-enabled learning has the potential to transform how we prepare students and professionals to face society’s most pressing issues. By giving today’s health professionals the most advanced facilities to work and learn together at CIME, we give them the best chance of becoming leaders capable of solving tomorrow’s healthcare challenges.”

“AKU has been the recipient of significant philanthropic support,” he added. “That support has enabled us to launch important new ventures, build new facilities and achieve ever-higher standards. We are very grateful to our donors for their extraordinary generosity.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam laid the foundation stone for the three buildings of CIME during his previous visit to Pakistan in 2013.

Modern medicine saves lives of children

Shahmeer Khan was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare and complex congenital heart defect in which he had a combination of four heart defects. A congenital heart defect, it is often called the “blue baby syndrome” because it causes the skin to turn bluish in color as a result of deoxygenated blood in the baby’s system. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common developmental defects, occurring in 1 per cent of the population world-wide.

All babies who have Tetralogy of Fallot need corrective surgery. Without treatment, the child might not grow and develop properly. Untreated cases usually develop severe complications over time, which might result in death or disability by early adulthood.

Shahmeer is among the growing ranks of children born with CHD, who are surviving, thanks to life-saving pediatric cardiology programmes such as the one at the Aga Khan University.

Cancer care nurses graduate from Aga Khan

The first batch of nurses specialising in the care and treatment of cancer patients from the Aga Khan University (AKU) graduated on Wednesday.

Speaking at the 14th graduation ceremony in Nairobi, the university’s president, Mr Firoz Rasul, said the rising cases of cancer in the country necessitated the creation of a curriculum specifically for nurses handling such patients.

According to Dr Eunice Ndirangu, the head of academics at the school of nursing and midwifery, the oncology course is one of a kind in the country and is only offered at AKU and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

A total of 80 students of AKU graduated.

“The students who just graduated were selected mainly through the support of their counties and their medical service providers who saw the very high need for more specialised skills and knowledge in oncology nursing and palliative care,” Sharon Brownie, the School of Nursing and Midwifery dean, said.

Johnson and Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust will sponsor the course making it possible for more students to be trained in the next class.

The valedictorian of this year’s ceremony was a graduand of the higher diploma in oncology nursing course.

Ms Immaculate Wambugu, a nurse, said her next step will be to develop a similar course, where she can train other nurses.

“My employer sponsored my studies, and they allowed me to be out of work for two days a week,” she said.

Aga Khan University Report 2017: Creating Visions of Opportunity

President Firoz Rasul’s Message

Aga Khan University Report 2017: Creating Visions of OpportunityThirty-five years ago, the Aga Khan University was launched amid much anticipation and considerable uncertainty. Could a new private university based in the developing world deliver on its ambition to generate essential knowledge, educate future leaders and meet world-class quality standards?

AKU’s 2017 Report furnishes evidence that we have made great strides toward achieving these goals. Fueled by the support of our partners and donors, we are changing lives in Asia, Africa and beyond. Our faculty, staff and alumni are improving education for rural children, tackling the rise of heart disease and cancer, saving the lives of vulnerable women and children, influencing policy at the highest levels and much more. In Pakistan alone, we have an annual economic impact of over US$ 1 billion, spark quality improvement far beyond our campuses and serve numerous low-income patients and students, according to a recent independent study.

That we have been able to achieve so much testifies to the support of individuals like you, and to the foresight of our founder and Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan.

Yet the University’s work is far from complete. As we celebrate our 35th anniversary, the problems facing low-income countries are more complex than ever, and we remain committed to constant quality improvement. Hence we are growing and evolving to meet the challenges of a new era. AKU is adding academic programmes in new disciplines, such as a master’s degree in digital journalism. We are treating far more patients and serving many more disadvantaged individuals than just a few years ago. And our plans to establish an Aga Khan University Hospital in Uganda are moving rapidly toward fruition.

I invite you to download our Report to learn more about the difference we are making with your help, as well as our plans to ensure AKU’s next 35 years are even more consequential than the last.

Firoz Rasul – President

Researchers at Aga Khan University and the University of Virginia launch artificial intelligence study

Karachi, May 29, 2018: Researchers at Aga Khan University and the University of Virginia are collaborating on an innovative project that will harness the power of artificial intelligence to understand a particularly complex disorder of the intestine, environmental enteric dysfunction (EED).

EED – often referred to as a neglected disease of poverty – is widespread among children in low-income countries such as Pakistan where the population is exposed to contaminated water and poor sanitation. EED hinders the gut’s ability to absorb essential nutrients compromising children’s growth potential and leaving them vulnerable to a range of diseases.

Data scientists have already demonstrated how ‘intelligent’ computers can outperform experienced radiologists and pathologists in detecting signs of disease in x-rays and biopsies. Dr Sana Syed, an assistant professor in paediatrics at the University of Virginia and Dr Asad Ali, associate dean for research at Aga Khan University, are now applying ‘deep learning’, a type of artificial intelligence, to train a computer programme to analyse microscopic images of tissue located deep inside the small intestine.
