The Best Response to the Coronavirus? Altruism, Not Panic

The impulse to secure your safety is understandable but counterproductive.


Are you fearful about catching the coronavirus? Are you anxious about whether you’re properly prepared for its arrival? You’re in good company.

In the past few days, I’ve had more than a few patients call or email to ask me to double or even triple the dosage of their prescription antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication so that they could have a bigger supply on hand “just in case.”

Throughout the country, people are stockpiling food in anticipation of a shortage or a quarantine. Supplies of Purell hand sanitizer flew off the shelves in local pharmacies and are now hard to find or even unavailable online.

I understand the impulse to secure one’s safety in the face of a threat. But the fact is that if I increase the supply of medication for my patients, I could well deprive other patients of needed medication, so I reluctantly declined those requests.

As a psychiatrist, I frequently tell my patients that their anxieties and fears are out of proportion to reality, something that is often true and comforting for them to realize. But when the object of fear is a looming pandemic, all bets are off.

In this case, there is reason for alarm. The coronavirus is an uncertain and unpredictable danger. This really grabs our attention, because we have been hard-wired by evolution to respond aggressively to new threats. After all, it’s safer to overact to the unknown than to do too little.

Unfortunately, that means we tend to overestimate the risk of novel dangers. I can cite you statistics until I am blue in the face demonstrating that your risk of dying from the coronavirus is minuscule compared with your risk of dying from everyday threats, but I doubt you’ll be reassured. For example, 169,000 Americans died by accident and 648,000 died of heart disease in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of Sunday morning 19 Americans had died from the coronavirus.

The reason this probably doesn’t make you feel better is simple: Just as we tend to assume the worst about novel threats — the safest, if not the most statistically justifiable, strategy — we tend to underestimate the danger of familiar risks because we are habituated to them. We are not very rational when it comes to assessing risk.

The good news is that even in the face of fear, we do have the capacity to act in ways that would help limit contagion during an epidemic. Specifically, we can behave altruistically, which benefits everyone.

The oral cavity contains several bacteria. These are usually present in small amounts and form plaque around the teeth. When we consume sugar, bacteria digest it and release an acidic substance. This substance, like the acidic foods mentioned above, weakens your teeth. To avoid this pathological process, we must maintain adequate oral hygiene habits.

How can we prevent the appearance of cavities?

There are simple recommendations that we can follow that can help us avoid the pain and discomfort that cavities cause:

- Reduce sugar consumption. In addition to helping prevent overweight and diabetes, eating less sugar a day means that the bacteria do not have enough food to cause injury.
- Do not smoke. The use of tobacco also promotes the development of cavities and should be avoided.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing your teeth removes plaque, preventing it from accumulating and wreaking havoc, and removes the remains of food that remain in the oral cavity after eating. Brushing should be done at least twice a day for two minutes. The toothbrush used must be soft and must be replaced after two to three months. There aren’t enough. Many are shoddy. Most aren’t even designed to tell us what we really want to know.


In the world’s ongoing quest to respond to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, one of the tools most often invoked and hailed is testing — testing for current infections, to determine who is ill and contagious, and testing for antibodies, a sign of past infection and possibly, too, of future immunity.

The goal is to identify people who might spread the virus and isolate them, and to allow anyone protected from reinfection to resume an active social and professional life.

Democrats in the United States Senate have proposed a plan for “fast, free testing in every community.” At a recent news briefing, Andrew M. Cuomo, the governor of New York State, declared: “The more testing, the more open the economy.” President Trump’s new business advisory council has warned that the American economy will not rebound until wide-scale screening takes place.

But there are major problems with this approach. Far too few tests are available in the United States. Some are shoddy. Even the ones that are precise aren’t designed to produce the kind of definitive yes-no results that people expect.

Reader’s Digest Canada: We know the virus is airborne to some extent, but how easily can infection spread that way? Is it okay to take a walk around my neighbourhood? Or even just sit on my porch?

Germ expert Jason Tetro: This virus spreads primarily through droplets, which are relatively large amounts of fluid that are expelled from your mouth when you cough or sneeze. But also, when you’re coughing, sneezing or breathing hard like when you’re working out, you expel aerosolized droplets, which are smaller.

The majority of the risk is being infected from the larger droplets, which occur within just over half a metre of an infected person. From that distance to two metres there is still some risk but not as much. Beyond two metres, the risk goes down significantly because everything but the smaller aerosolized droplets will have fallen. Those smaller droplets are not as much of an issue because the amount of virus in them is so low that you would have to be constantly exposed to them to be infected.

So as long as you’re appropriately distancing from other people, it’s safe to take a walk or sit in front of your house.

So exactly how much of the virus do I have to be exposed to in order to get sick?

What you’re talking about is called the minimal infective dose. While we don’t know exactly what it is for this virus, for other respiratory viruses it’s usually around 1,000 virions—the term for each individual particle of virus—accumulated over one or several exposures. If you happen to be immunocompromised, that number goes down significantly.

Most of the time, the aerosols that are let off when you exercise would have about a dozen virions in them, or fewer.

So if I live in a building, I don’t need to be worried about it traveling through vents then, right?

The only time that would be a concern is if there’s a person who is on some kind of mechanical ventilator and it’s continually letting off aerosols into the HVAC system of the building. The odds of that happening in a residential building are very low, and even if it was happening, there’s also a very low chance the aerosols generated would lead to an infection of a person in another apartment.

We’ve covered walks, but what if I’m going for a jog and I hear a runner in front of me cough?

Run in the other direction. When people exercise, they’re increasing their breath, and expelling more volume. When you exercise, you produce more mucus—so even just breathing will produce more droplets. If you cough, the amount is going to be really high.

Also, if you’re running, the increased distance you’re covering means you should be a good five metres away from another jogger in order to be absolutely sure you don’t run into their cough.

Even if you’re walking, or just standing on the sidewalk, if a person walking by looks like they’re coughing, the best thing to do is turn your face away and walk in the other direction.

I’ve sometimes held my breath when passing people. Does that help?

Yes, that’s a good idea. If you close your mouth and you’re not breathing, nothing’s getting in there. If the virus gets on you, it would get trapped inside your sweat droplets or get caught up in the hairs inside your nose, which will prevent it from infecting you. Of course, the best thing is to have some kind of barrier—a scarf, a neck tube or a face mask.

“I just went down on my knees,” his mother recalled later. “I just implored God for mercy.”

Can Walking Barefoot Heal Your Heart?

Historically speaking, it seems like we’re right in step with our forebearers. Long before we had cushiony sneakers, our distant ancestors tended to walk barefoot over rock, rubble, dirt, stick, and stream. Their feet were strong and nimble, able to sense and react to any surface they encountered. More recent native cultures often walk through nature on their naked soles, instead of wearing moccasins or similar footwear.

Commonalities like “barefootedness”, that we see repeated among ancient groups, beg for further investigation as to “why?” Especially in cultures where simple foot gear was already an option.

Thankfully, there is good science behind shoelessness and the findings are fascinating.

Current Research on Grounding

It turns out that the sensation we feel when our feet make contact with moist sand is more than just a feeling. This therapeutic touch of mother earth is laden with remarkable health benefits,

- reducing inflammation,
- boosting antioxidants in our body,
- improving sleep,
- and, promoting healthy blood flow.

The primordial practice of walking barefoot, sometimes referred to as “grounding,” is only just beginning to be studied by modern science. One of the most groundbreaking findings is the powerful heart health effect of direct skin contact with the earth.

A study published by the Journal of Alternative And Complementary Medicine from 2013 states that walking barefoot “reduces blood viscosity, which is a major factor in cardiovascular disease”.

Blood viscosity is a term used to describe the “thickness and stickiness of your blood.” The lower the viscosity, the easier your blood flows through your blood vessels and circulates throughout your body. The higher your blood’s viscosity, or thickness, the slower it moves.

To test the effects of grounding on blood viscosity, subjects had their red blood cells (RBCs) examined under a microscope to determine the number of clumped groups of RBCs in each sample. High instances of aggregation (or clumping) in human blood increases your blood viscosity and can result in cardiovascular disease. This experiment was intended to measure whether grounding to the earth’s innate electrical charge would have a positive effect on this blood condition.
