"Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas" - Mac Virjee With Solo Harmonium Accompaniment

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1sHklzMrJo

Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas
O Ali, this glorious assembly

Mac Virjee presents a beautiful and serene rendition of "Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas" with the harmonium as a solo accompanying instrument. The harmonium is a wind instrument that actually originated in the West and it was only in the mid 20th century that harmoniums, in the smaller sizes we know today, started becoming widely available in the Indian subcontinent. Its strengths include the sustained note, strong support of the notes to the vocalist and crispness of taan (rapid improvised melodic vocal technique used in raga singing).

"Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas" munajat (prayer, supplication) started getting recited on the succession of Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah as our 48th Imam in 1885. The 136 year tradition has continued to date and the munajat is now recited on Imamat Day every year in Jamatkhanas to mark the anniversary of Mawlana Shah Karim al Hussaini's ascension to the position of our Imam.

"Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas" is a prayer, expression of gratitude, seeking of divine help as well as a message of greetings (mubarakis) and expression of love for our Imam-e-Zaman. For this reason, it evokes very deep feelings amongst the murids when recited as it touches on both the spiritual as well as our temporal world.

Medley of 9 Garbis - A Special Tribute to Pir Shams by Amin Mawani

Medley of 9 Garbis
A Special Tribute To Pir Shams By Amin Mawani

Amin Mawani pays special tribute to Pir Shams Sabzwari in a "Medley of 9 Garbis" in this wonderful video presentation.

Pir Shams Sabzwari lived in the 13th/14th century and occupies a prominent position amongst the famous Ismaili Da'is. He was sent by our twenty-ninth Imam, Kassim Shah, to preach the Ismaili Nizari faith in South Asia.

Pir Shams conducted his missionary activities all over the North-western and Western parts of South Asia and revived the idea of the necessity of a living guide in the minds of his non-Muslim audiences, bringing thousands of them to the fold of Ismailism. Pir Shams composed numerous ginans and granths as well as 28 garbis that were used very effectively for proselytizing (conversion) purpose at that time. The garbis had spiritual verses that were composed to the dance form popular in Gujarat, India amongst the local population. These garbis are very popular to date and are recited as ginans in Jamatkhanas. Ismailis do not proselytize or dance to ginans in the present time.

Production of this presentation was done in Aurora in Ontario, Canada and in Ahmedabad, India. Amin recited the garbis, Samir Raval and Mana Raval (Samir-Mana), India's first husband-wife music director duo were in charge of music production. They are a very well-known name in the Gujarati film and TV industry. The lyrics and original composition is attributed to Pir Shams.

"Karsanaji Bhanere, Arjun Sambharo" - Ginan By Amin Mawani

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2O5fkEeys0

"Karsanaji Bhanere, Arjun Sambharo"
Krishna recites, O Arjun listen to the discourse

Amin Mawani presents Pir Sadardin's "Karsanaji Bhanere, Arjun Sambharo", a very rarely recited beautiful ginan in Raag Brindavani Sarang. Shanoor Amlani and Shelina Mawani-Chatur enrichen the presentation with their wonderful choral support.

Raag Brindavani Sarang is a popular afternoon melody in the North Indian classical music tradition. This raga is known to express the devotion of the singer, with the creation of a romantic, and a spiritual mood.

Pir Sadardin's "Karsanaji" ginan is a discourse between Krishna (Karsanaji) and his disciple Arjun. The theme is the liberation of the soul from the cycle of repeated births, the relationship of the individual soul to the Supreme Soul and the eventual divine merging of the two.

Pir Sadardin says the True Guide who is wise and steeped in knowledge demystifies and makes it all clear for us. Pir Sadardin implores us to channel our devotion to this Guide who will help us attain the eternal station.

"Unchaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa" - Nargis Balolia

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgbsWGxeIA0

Unchaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa
A High and Lofty Fortress

JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's wonderful rendition of Pir Hasan Kabiruddin's well-known ginan "Unchaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa".

The ginan is about the soul's yearning for Noorani Didar (Beatific Vision). Pir Hasan Kabiruddin uses the easily understood concept of human love and pains of separation to convey the more abstract idea of higher Divine Love. The Pir allegorizes (uses as symbols) a fish in the ocean seeking to be saved as an example of difficulties of breaking past worldly attachments for the soul to find its ultimate fulfillment. In Eastern philosophy, the sea is the symbol of the cycle of life (bhava saagar). To be saved from the sea means release from the flux of life.

"Unchaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa" ginan is from the recently released Volume 6 of Nargis Balolia's album which consists of a total of 5 wonderfully recited ginans.

Ginan Melodies on Theremin - Andrea Marras

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8aKHDxKHlg

Ginan Melodies on Theremin
Hans Puri, Cheto Cheto and Kalpat Jalpat

Andrea Marras presents some popular ginan melodies on the theremin, a musical instrument played without touching it! Ginans are devotional hymns recited by the Ismaili community who are of South Asian origin.

Andrea Marras is a professional violinist and composer with inclination and interest towards unusual instruments like theremin and hulusi. Andrea has performed in over 1,000 concerts internationally, playing for Italian orchestras and with the ensemble Tango Spleen.

The theremin is one of the earliest electronic instruments. The instrument has two metal antennas that can sense the positions of the player's hands, which control the volume and pitch of the instrument. The loop antenna on the left controls the volume while the upright antenna controls the pitch. Theremin is controlled without physical contact by the thereminist.

We are presenting Andrea's rendition of 3 ginan melodies (Hans Puri, Cheto Cheto and Kalpat Jalpat) on the theremin, with a backdrop of piano and violin, as part of our new initiative, the JollyGul Regional & Unusual Musical Instruments Series.

"Maal Khajinaa"
All the wealth

Yasmin Amlani gives us a beautiful and soul-searching rendition of "Maal Khajinaa" ginan composed by Sayyid Gulmali Shah. Nadeem Ali and his group have done the music arrangement and production.

Karim Maherali aptly writes about the gist and meaning of the ginan as follows: "This Ginan highlights the illusory and fleeting nature of this world and emphasizes the need to get rid of the delusion of ascribing permanence to the material aspects of life. The state of slumber of forgetfulness can be overcome by engaging in constant remembrance of God and in seeking enlightenment of the inner life with the help of a Spiritual Guide. If this delusion is not overcome in this life, one will have to endure cycles of rebirth."

Yasmin Amlani is a vocalist based in Toronto, Canada and has been performing for over a decade in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Swahili and English across different genres of music.

"Jogi So Jo Jugaa Jug Jogi" (Ginan) - Yasmin Amlani

Post by kmaherali »

Jogi So Jo Jugaa Jug Jogi
A true yogi is the one who is a yogi for the ages

Yasmin Amlani gives us a beautiful rendition of the popular ginan "Jogi So Jo Jugaa Jug Jogi" composed by Pir Hasan Kabiruddin. Nadeem Ali and his group have done the music arrangement and production.

Pir Hasan Kabiruddin was a person of immense simplicity and is known to have used a modest coconut husk from which he ate and drank frugally. He was contemplative, deeply spiritual and preferred spending long stretches of time in solitude.

In "Jogi So Jo Jugaa Jug Jogi", Pir Hasan Kabiruddin reminds us that faith has to emanate from deep within us and making an external display of it, like merely wearing an earring (a symbol of a yogi), does not make one a yogi (ascetic). He encourages us to wear the "earrings" in our hearts from where they can not be removed and make no noise, unlike an external dangling earring.

Yasmin Amlani is a vocalist based in Toronto, Canada and has been performing for over a decade in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Swahili and English across different genres of music.

JollyGul presents "Jogi So Jo Jugaa Jug Jogi" with lyrics and English translations.

Satgur Nur Na Putla

Post by kmaherali »

Image

Satgur Nur Na Putla is a granth (long format ginan) composed by Pir Satgur Nur.

Pir Satgur Nur was the earliest Pir who undertook the mission to spread Ismailism from Persia to the Indian Subcontinent. He is known for his pioneering efforts in establishment of the Satpanth tradition.

Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah once gave an analogy of the Satpanth mission as a plantation. In that context Pir Satgur Nur cleared the land. Pir Shams ploughed it, Pir Sadardin watered it and Pir Hasan Kabirudin bore the fruit.

Satgur Nur Na Putla is elaborate discourse and story of remarkable "miracles" that Pir Satgur Nur is said to have performed. Putla means idols.

Pir Satgur Nur died in 1094 and his mausoleum is at Navsari near Surat in India.

Please start enjoying "Satgur Nur Na Putla" with lyrics and translations on the custom audio player on our website by clicking on the link below or on JollyGul On-Demand (green) App which can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store (for iPhones) or Google Play Store (for Android) if you do not have it already installed on your smartphone.

Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas
O Ali, this glorious assembly

Taufiq Karmali recites "Yaa Ali Khub Majalaas" in celebration of Imamat Day 2022. Taufiq had last recorded the munajat during Golden Jubilee and today's presentation is a new rendition.

"Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas" munajat (prayer, supplication) started getting recited on the succession of Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah as our 48th Imam in 1885. The 137 year tradition has continued to date and the munajat is now recited on Imamat Day every year in Jamatkhanas to mark the anniversary of Hazar Imam's ascension to the position of our Imam in 1957.

"Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas" is a prayer, expression of gratitude, seeking of divine help as well as a message of greetings (mubarakis) and expression of love for our Imam-e-Zaman. "Ginan-Qasida Fusion" - With Modern Music Composition

Nar Naklank Keri Vaat (Ginan)
Har Dil Ki Ba Rezay Imam Ashna Shawad (Qasida)

JollyGul presents "Ginan-Qasida Fusion" from Hunza Pakistan as part of Imamat Day 2022 celebrations on our platform.

The ginan verses from "Nar Naklank Keri Vaat" is sung by Asif Virani and is written by Sayyed Fateh Ali Shah. The qasida lines from "Har Dil Ki Ba Rezay Imam Ashna Shawad" is sung by Rahim Daad and written by Raees Hassan Ul Moti. Music has been composed by Asif Virani and Mazuz.

Mazuz was overall in charge of this project. What makes this composition special is that Mazuz brings together both the South Asian (ginan) and Central Asian (qasida) traditions in Ismaili devotional repertoire under one song. And through a bold new modern music composition, the song makes a serious attempt to reach out to the younger generation and present the timeless devotional poetry to them in their own preferred musical style and on their own terms.

Ye Mitha Muhammad Naam Sunno Bhai Munivaro | Ginan | Sayyed Saleh | Taufiq Karmali & Nasreen Karmali

Post by kmaherali »

Image

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wSS6SkrGXo

Taufiq Karmali and Nasreen Karmali give a graceful rendition of "Ye Mitha Muhammad Naam Sunno Bhai Munivaro" ginan by Sayyed Saleh in time for "Milad-un-Nabi" which is the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

This is the 5th Ginan is the new Ilm-e-Maarifat album which is in the process of being released by Taufiq. Music creation and production of this album is being done by Taufiq.

This ginan emphasizes the spiritual significance of the names Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Ali (A.S), revered figures in Islam. It reflects on the awe-inspiring nature of God's creation, like the earth and sky existing without visible support, and incorporates concepts like the four yugas to describe different epochs and levels of divine creation.

The hymn urges the faithful, "momin brothers," to recognize the guiding light of Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali for spiritual enlightenment. It suggests that those who embody the teachings and virtues of these figures have a clear and illuminated path in life.

The ginan is attributed to Sayyed Saleh, who is the original composer of this devotional hymn.

Taufiq's emotive voice brings to life the profound lyrics that speak of purity, truth, and the essence of faith, resonating deeply with the core teachings of Satpanth.
