JollyGul.com: GINANS-ON-DEMAND

Ginan-ON-Demand

JollyGul.com has just launched a new Ginans-On-Demand service which caters specifically to the preference of those who wish to listen only to ginans without music, as recited in Jamatkhanas.

The ginans stream from the JollyGul.com server can be accessed through a custom audio player on the GinansOnDemand.com webpage.

This service allows listeners to select titles from a playlist and start, pause, skip, forward, rewind, stop – they are in full control! There is also an ability to search – by title, composer or reciter and play those ginans. Or listeners can let the audio player play ginans at random from the playlist.

Ginans-On-Demand service is separate from JollyGul RADIO which plays all types of Ismaili music – ginans with and without instruments, geets, qasidas, modern and fusion music.

Utth Baetth Re Keeyaa Sotaa
"O man! Get up and sit in meditation,
why are you asleep, neglecting your prayers?"

JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's beautiful rendition of "Utth Baetth Re Keeyaa Sotaa" in a video format with running lyrics and translations.

The melodious ginan, composed by Sayyed Imaam Shaah in the 15th Century, is a reminder to momins (followers) about the benefits of early morning prayers.

JollyGul.com has used the Hunza (Northern Pakistan) night sky as a backdrop for this video with stunning long exposure imagery and time lapse video of our Milky Way Galaxy. Hunza is one of the best places in the world to observe the night sky because of its remoteness and lack of light pollution of the sky from big city lights.

The ginan video is a very special tribute to our volunteers and Jamati members throughout the world who provide transportation and ride sharing services for early morning prayers.

If you wish to learn a bit more about Hunza, the Milky Way Galaxy and our humble position in it, please refer to the section below in this email.

Watch the video with wonderful ginan recitation by Nargis Balolia accompanied by music and check out the amazing Milky Way Galaxy views in the skies of Hunza.

Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas
O Ali, this glorious assembly
Munajat - Prayer, Supplication
Imamat Day 2019 Special

"Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas" munajat started getting recited on succession of Imam Sultan Mohamed Shah as our 48th Imam in 1885.

The 134 year tradition has continued to date and the munajat is now recited on Imamat Day every year in Jamatkhanas to mark the anniversary of Mawlana Shah Karim al Hussaini's ascension to the position of our Imam.

"Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas" is a prayer, expression of gratitude, seeking of divine help as well as a message of greetings (mubarakis) and expression of love for our Imam-e-Zaman. For this reason, it evokes very deep feelings amongst the murids when recited as it touches on both the spiritual as well as our temporal world.

Taufiq Karmali's absolutely brilliant rendition of "Yaa Ali Khub Majaalas" takes us all right into the middle of a celebratory occasion (assembly, majaalas), yet keeps us firmly anchored throughout the recitation to its deep and beautiful spiritual roots.

JollyGul.com presents Almas Kabani's rendition of Pir Hasan Kabiruddin's U(n)chaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa ginan as part of its Salgirah 2019 Celebration Program for the Jamat.

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PibV3mRnqs&feature=emb_logo

The ginan is about the soul's yearning for Noorani Didar (Beatific Vision). Pir Hasan Kabiruddin uses the easily understood concept of human love and pains of separation to convey the more abstract idea of higher Divine Love. The Pir allegorizes (uses as symbols) a fish in the ocean seeking to be saved and a bird in a cage wanting (but afraid) to be freed as examples of difficulties of breaking past worldly attachments for the soul to find its ultimate fulfillment. In Eastern philosophy, the sea is the symbol of the cycle of life (bhava saagar). To be saved from the sea means release from the flux of life.

Redemption is a common theme in many different philosophies. In Ismaili philosophy, it stands for the absorption of the individual soul into the Noor of Imamat.

This is the first time JollyGul.com has used 3D animation capabilities in its videos to create environments. Scenes in this video have been created by using 3D Animation software. They do not represent actual buildings or places. The goal is to enhance the visualization of the story and effectively convey the message in the ginan.

This write-up and the imagery in the video have been inspired by an article about U(n)chaare Kott ginan in Simerg.com by the Late Esmail Thawerbhoy. We pay special tribute to his passionate interest in research and study of ginans and religious philosophy as well for all his contributions to various publications during his lifetime.

#Salgirah2019 Special Presentation by JollyGul.com: Ya Mawla Jampudipe Umayoji Ginan By Taufiq Karmali

JollyGul.com presents Taufiq Karmali‘s rendition of Pir Sadardin’s ginan Ya Mawla Jampudipe Umayoji Ya Ali (Oh Lord! The Devotees Of The Indian Subcontinent Have Sought You, Oh Ali). This is part of the ongoing series of videos for the Jamat to celebrate Salgirah 2019.

Pir Sadardin was a celebrated Ismaili missionary of the 14th Century during the time of our 30th Imam Shah Islam Shah. It was generally a perilous time in Ismaili history for the Imamat. However, it was also a time of eastward expansion and conversion in the Indian Subcontinent (Jampudip). Pir Sadardin and his son Pir Hasan Kabiruddin were key players in this very successful proselytizing drive. The ginan is of “venti” (supplication, request) for the Imam to visit the murids in the newly emerging areas of Ismaili presence.

Taufiq‘s rendition of the ginan with music was originally recorded during Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee and is part of the Ilm-e-Noor album. JollyGul.com presents the video with running lyrics and translations.

Ginans-On-Demand
(As recited in Jamatkhanas)
Expanded Service

JollyGul.com had launched its Ginans-On-Demand service in December 2018. The service caters to the preference of those who wish to listen to ginans without music, as recited in Jamatkhanas. The ginans stream from the JollyGul.com servers (different from JollyGul RADIO) and can be accessed on-demand through a custom audio player on the Ginans-On-Demand service webpage.

Ginans-On-Demand service has gained wide popularity in the last one year and there have been requests from members of the Jamat to expand the service and additionally have ginans categorized by themes, occasion and time of day. The expanded service, which we are launching today, is our direct response to this request.

We have created a ginan infographic with "hotspots" which will help you navigate to the various categories. You can click on any circle on the image below and that will take you to the specific category described in that circle. If you are using a smartphone, zoom in if necessary.

And remember, even though the ginans have been categorized, this is for your sheer convenience - there are no rules that certain types of ginans can be recited only at certain times or occasions. Listen to any ginan at any time depending on what you prefer or what mood you are in or what melody you really like to listen in that instance. Relax, enjoy and just celebrate our beautiful tradition and wonderful faith.

Utth Jaag Man Mera (A Ginan For Our Times) - By Nargis Balolia

JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's beautiful rendition of Sayyeda Imaam Begum's ginan Utth Jaag Man Mera (Rise up and be awake).

The ginan delivers a clear and timely message: do not get totally engrossed in worldly pursuits to the detriment and total neglect of your spiritual existence. The composer also questions: “why do you take so much pride in the activities of the world?” And cautions: "do not fall into the entrappings of this physical illusory form".

One of the central most powerful and beautiful tenets of Ismailism is the importance of constantly balancing the spiritual-bateni and the worldly-zaheri dimensions of our lives. This is not always easy, but it is something that we nonetheless need to be fully aware of and steadily strive for all the time.

The message of balance is a universal one - people of all faiths and traditions (and even those who practice spirituality outside organized religion) can pursue this in their own way and within their own philosophical frameworks.

Which brings us to the unprecedented crisis we are living through at present. An invisible ultramicroscopic virus has brought the sophisticated world economy to its knees. This is a truly humbling experience for us all.

With Allah's help and human ingenuity we will get through this. But we don't know how long it will take, the total final tally in human lives and the aggregate cost in lost economic output.

And as we emerge from the other side of this problem, the key question is what are we going to look like? Will this experience re-affirm our collective common humanity? Or will we degenerate into finger pointing and blame shifting? Are we going to be ready to jump right back into the rat race?

Most importantly: Are we going to be much more "balanced" as individuals and as a society? Time will tell.

In the meanwhile, listen to the ginan by clicking on the link below. You may feel overwhelmed with emotions in some verses of the ginan.

Talika Mubarak April 2020 - Ginan Recitation By Alnoor Saleh

Talika Mubarak
Mawlana Hazar Imam has sent us all a message related to the ongoing global health and economic crisis. He has also conveyed to us his blessings and prayers for mushkil-asan. The message available in 10 languages can be accessed from the official website of the Ismaili Muslim community.

https://the.ismaili/global/news/imamat-news/message-mawlana-hazar-imam

Receiving Talika from our Imam-e-Zaman is always a very special event for us all. We receive guidance, prayers and blessings through the communication and in turn the Jamat expresses its gratitude with recitation of a few verses of ginan in Jamatkhanas.

The feelings of a murid on this special occasion is very difficult to describe in words. But let us try, nonetheless. A child knows how much a parent loves him or her. A parent would do absolutely anything to ensure the safety and well-being of the child and be willing to sacrifice everything for that goal. Yet a child still yearns for the occasional hug, a cuddle that expresses the special love.

In the same way, we all know how much Mawlana Hazar Imam constantly thinks about us all and about our safety and well-being. And he has done that incessantly for almost 63 years now through his hard work and institution building efforts. He is concerned about the worldly dimension and material progress as well as spiritual aspects. The present problems and the near future challenges. And the long term strategic positioning of the Jamat as well. Yet, when a Talika arrives, it is still very much a moment of profound bliss for us all because it is that "parental hug" that we are all yearning for - a powerful expression and communication of that special love.

Let us now listen to Alnoor Saleh recite 3 verses of Pir Hasan Kabiruddin's ginan “Saahebe farmaan lakhee mokalyaa” (The Imam has written the message and sent it to us). The video shows lyrics and translations.

Bindra Re Van Maa(n) Sukh Chare Re Gaava(n)tree
In Vrindavan a cow grazed peacefully

Ginan With A Message For Mother's Day

JollyGul.com presents Nasim Bhimji's soulful rendition of Pir Sadardin's ginan Bindra Re Van Maa(n) Sukh Chare Re Gaava(n)tree. This is a story of a cow that grazed peacefully in the Vrindavan forest until confronted by a hungry lion.

Vrindavan (also pronounced Brindaban) in Uttar Pradesh India is one of the most sacred places in Hinduism and it is where Lord Krishna spent most of his childhood.

Mothers have a very special status in Islam. In a contest between mothers and fathers, the mothers take the top 3 prizes. Fathers end up 4th. A person repeatedly asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) what he should do to assure his salvation. Three times the Prophet gave him the same reply - "Be good to your mother." The man tried the 4th time - he asked: "Next to her? To what other person should I be good to?". The Prophet said: "To your father."

This ginan is about that special bond between a mother and her child. And Nasim Bhimji sings it with compassion, feeling and depth. She has a rich melodious voice. Many of her ginan recitations are those that are not so commonly recited, but can be found in 3 volumes of her album "From My Soul To Yours".

JollyGul.com presents the ginan with animation to enhance the visual storytelling. Line by line lyrics and translations are displayed in the video. Start watching by clicking on the link below.

U(n)chaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa
A High and Lofty Fortress

Ginan With Music
Eid al-Fitr 2020 Special Presentation

JollyGul.com presents Pir Hasan Kabiruddin's U(n)chaare Kott Bahu Vechanaa ginan as part of its Eid al-Fitr 2020 presentation for the Jamat.

Recitation is by Shadaj and music composition and arrangement is done by JollyGul Music Group. The recitation style is a mixture of three main raagas: Ahir Bhairav, Bhairav and Kirvani. The intense flavor of Bhairav when combined with Kirvani makes the ginan soothing and the touch of Ahir Bhairav makes the combination divine. It is somewhat different from the traditional recitation style the Jamat is familiar with.

Scenes in this video have been created by using 3D Animation software. They do not represent actual buildings or places. The goal is to enhance the visualization of the story and effectively convey the message in the ginan.

JollyGul.com presents Taufiq Karmali and Sharmin Bandali Alibhai's extraordinary duet rendition of Pir Sadardin's ginan Paachhamathee Shaahaa Naa Dall Aavashe (The Lord will arrive from the West with his entourage).

This is a happy ginan where Pir Sadardin is anticipating the arrival of Imam-e-Zaman in the Indian Sub-Continent.
