Meet Ali Jamal of Stablegold Hospitality

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Jamal.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 1972 Idi Amin, a dictator who staged a coup in Uganda, forced all Asian minorities in the country to leave within 48 days. There was a major upheaval, many Asians left homes, businesses and all of their worldly possessions back in Uganda while they arrived in countries such as England and Canada as refugees. My family including my parents, Uncles and Grandparents were a part of this wave or refugees.

BARAZA: Swahili studies conference at SOAS

Excerpt:

This year’s Baraza is dedicated to Dr Farouk Topan, leading Swahili scholar and writer who, with others, pioneered the study and teaching of Swahili Literature in Kiswahili at the University of Dar-es-Salaam and the University of Nairobi in the 1960s and 70s. He then taught at SOAS for many years until his retirement in 2006, and was one of the founder editors of the departmental Journal of African Cultural Studies (JACS). In more recent years, he has continued to provide leadership in Swahili studies at the Aga Khan University. Although we welcome all papers or presentations, this year we are actively soliciting academic papers, oral performance, and other ways of reflecting on the life, writing and scholarship of this outstanding scholar, whose career has exemplified many trends in the development of scholarship, institutional histories and transnational connections. Former students and colleagues are particularly encouraged to pay tribute to this great East African scholar.

HUSSEIN JANMOHAMED, YOUTH INSIDE OPERA MUSIC FACILITATOR

By Yazmeen Kanji

Tapestry Opera is thrilled to have Motivational Speaker, Choral Director and Choral Conductor Hussein Janmohamed as this year’s Youth Inside Opera Music Facilitator.

Hussein discovered his passion for music at a young age through his Ismaili Muslim community where he was exposed to folk dancing and choral singing. He enjoyed playing the recorder at school and learned to play the accordion, also joining school choirs. In musical environments, Hussein felt a sense of belonging and healing. Most importantly, when he faced racism, “music class and choir class became a place of breaking the barriers and creating something beautiful together.” Hussein continued to pursue an education in music, also achieving a PhD in Philosophy. As a music educator, he incorporates spiritual work into many of his workshops. Growing up in a community of faith and learning about shared human values of compassion, generosity and kindness has greatly inspired his work today.

Pakistani mountaineers hit new heights scaling the legendary K2

Two Ismaili mountaineers recently summited K2, the second highest mountain in the world and considered by many to be a more difficult and dangerous climb than Mount Everest. Fazal Ali is the first Pakistani to have ascended to the summit of K2 (8,611m) on three separate occasions. He first conquered K2 in 2014, followed by a second successful climb to the summit in 2017.

Fazal, who comes from the Shimshal Valley in Hunza, began his mountaineering career in 2002. His accomplishments include climbing Spantik (7,027m) in Pakistan, and Muztagh Ata (7,509m) and Gasherbrum I (8,080m) in China.

Sirbaz Khan, who hails from Aliabad, Hunza, also climbed K2 as part of the same expedition. It was his first summit of this peak. Sirbaz started his mountaineering career in 2016. As part of an international expedition in 2017, he climbed Nanga Parbat also known as Killer Mountain (8,124m) in Pakistan, successfully reaching the summit on 2 October 2017.

Excerpt:

MobSquad — which matches Silicon Valley startups with software engineers and data scientists in Canada — is the brainchild of Relay Ventures, a venture capital firm with offices in Toronto and Silicon Valley. Irfhan Rawji, MobSquad CEO and one of Relay’s venture partners, said Relay invests in a number of Silicon Valley-based startups and knows the struggles they face to find talent.

“We were trying to help our own portfolio companies solve that challenge,” Rawji said. “So one of our ideas was could we help solve that challenge using Canadian talent . . . Then it grew to be, if this is an opportunity for Relay companies, why wouldn’t other companies be interested?”

TEDxTrondheim 2018- Gulabuddin Sukhanwar

https://www.facebook.com/TEDxTrondheim/ ... =3&theater

Take a minute and think about how important words are. Not merely imperative for communication but laden with significance, words can influence and change the world, for better or for worse.

Meet Gulabuddin Sukhanwar. When your last name literally means “speaker”, it seems there is no other path destined for you in life but one of words.

Gulabuddin was born in the small village of Bamyan in Afghanistan. The earliest memories of his homeland are that of Soviet Union bombings, civil war and the Taliban regime.

An activist and a believer in the power of words as an engine for change, Gulabuddin Gulabuddin Sukhanwar: History of Afghanistan: Time for a re-write!spoke at a presidential campaign before 50 000 people in support of democracy in Afghanistan. The impact and result of his words? Having to flee from his country with nothing but what he carried within him – his language, culture and knowledge. That is how Gulabuddin arrived in Trondheim.

Working now at Litteraturhuset i Trondheim, Gulabuddin has developed a project called “Literature for Inclusion”, where literature and language are celebrated and used as tools to promote acceptance and understanding between cultures and within communities.

If your curiosity has been whetted by now, meet Gulabuddin on October 21st for the TEDxTrondheim 2018 event to hear more from a man of his words, literature lover Gulabuddin.

At just 24, Chicago native Shams Charania is one of the biggest NBA reporters in the business

In life, experience rules. This is the conventional wisdom, but, of course, there are always exceptions.

In the case of Shams Charania and NBA reporting — where the bar to entry is generally quite high — he stands as an extreme anomaly.

At just 24 years old, Charania already stands as one of the most-followed, highest-profile NBA reporters in the biz. In a league where player movement and off-season drama have taken center stage, scoops have become currency for media members, and few folks get scoops like Charania.

The path he took to reach this point might be even more impressive than his work: Charania made his own way, essentially, cold-contacting people in the league beginning at age 17 and relentlessly working (and networking) from there. He has been breaking news since his teen years, eventually gaining a national profile and a job at Yahoo Sports with some of the biggest basketball reporters in the biz — all the while attending Loyola University in Rogers Park.

VIDEO: 40 years of family dedication earns Langley entrepreneur accolades

A&W's Nick Nuraney was recipient of the chamber's George Preston Business Person of the Year award.

Back in 1978, when the Nuraney family first came from North Vancouver to Langley to check out a rural A&W drive-in as a business opportunity, from his perch in the back seat young Nick thought the drive would never end.

Forty years later, the family is not only still involved in operating the Langley A&W restaurants, but Nick – now owner of nine stores – was singled out for this week for recognition as an outstanding Langley entrepreneur.

He was crowned the business person of the year by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce Thursday night before a crowd of 300 at the Cascades Casino.

“It feels a little overwhelming,” Nuraney told Black Press just moments after being presented the award during the chamber’s 22nd annual Business Excellence celebrations.

“I think my heart is beating like crazy. It was an honour to be nominated and then when I won, I just couldn’t believe that I won,” Nuraney said.

Malik Talib: The 2018 VanMag (Vancouver) Power 50 List
BY ISMAILIMAIL POSTED ON NOVEMBER 6, 2018

Eighteen years into our annual power ranking, it’s clear that it’s not just the names on list that change and shift over time, but our definition of power itself. In 2018, power isn’t just found in the hands of board room bosses and high rollers (though you’ll find plenty still in this year’s class of influencers): it’s also wielded by Vancouverites who are moving the dial in quieter—but equally meaningful—ways. The grassroots activists swaying developers, the humble politicians rolling up their sleeves, and the behind-the-scenes players facing the opioid crisis with concrete solutions: it’s a list that’s heavy on the nice-guy factor, but don’t be fooled—this city’s power players, on all sides of the game, are in it to win it.

37. Malik Talib
President, Aga Khan Council for Canada
As president of the Aga Khan Council for Canada, Malik Talib is one of the most influential voices within the Ismaili Muslim community in Canada, a group that wields incredible wealth and entrepreneurial power. But a huge part of the culture is also about giving back, and Talib embraces this philosophy, too: in addition to being a high-powered tax lawyer turned investor (with stakes in a wide variety of industries—from real estate to mining to food distribution), he’s been ubiquitous on a variety of philanthropic boards, including the Vancouver Foundation and BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

In N.H. election stunner, a onetime refugee knocks off entrenched incumbent

He’s a veteran state representative who has railed against immigrants “getting everything” at the expense of people born and raised in the state. She’s a 27-year-old former Afghan refugee making her first run for political office.

So when the tally from Tuesday’s Democratic primary in Concord, N.H., was announced, evenSafiya Wazir said she was astounded. She hadn’t just beaten state Representative Dick Patten, a 66-year-old former city councilor. She crushed him, winning 329 votes to his 143.

“When I heard the results, I was shocked, and I had this look, like, ‘Did I hear that right?’ ” she said Wednesday. “And I looked down and, oh my gosh, it’s true. It was absolutely outstanding. I couldn’t believe I won the primary.”

U of T Pharmacy student reflects on rotation in Uganda

Excerpt:

After four years of working as a hospital pharmacist, Shellyza felt she wanted to pursue additional education that would expand her clinical knowledge and skill set. She completed the degree in 24 months, while maintaining her full-time hospital position. She recommends students take full advantage of the rotations to gain new experience, as she did with her rotation at Lacor Hospital. “It’s not about the grade anymore it’s about the learning,” she said.

Building from this international experience, Shellyza is now the national co-president for Pharmacist without Borders Canada (PSF) a volunteer organization of Canadian pharmacists that provides pharmaceutical and technical assistance in the implementation or improvement of community and hospital pharmacies internationally.

“I feel like I am a better clinical pharmacist now and have embarked on a lifelong ambition to be involved in international development,” said Shellyza. “My overall knowledge has improved as well as my clinical skill set. This program really opened doors for me to accelerate my career.”

Learning, Leading, and Serving

Nothing describes the values championed by Stablegold Hospitality CEO Ali Jamal better than the slogan that defines one of Marietta’s most impactful youth organizations - Youth Empowerment through Learning, Leading, and Serving (YELLS).

Over the last few years, Stablegold emphasized its pledge to these values with ongoing contributions to their Afterschool Program and events.

In October, for example, another $5,000 contribution was made to sponsor the YELLS 10th Anniversary Networking Dinner.

YELLS is a non-profit youth development organization based in Marietta, Georgia. It was founded over ten years ago when Marietta High School Teacher Laura Keefe teamed up with community organizations who shared her vision to flourish the infinite potential of Franklin Gateway’s local youth.

The new future leaders are given opportunities to lead large scale projects that have a profound impact on the community.
