Austin, Texas, 30 October 2009 — Governor Rick Perry of Texas and His Highness the Aga Khan, 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, today signed a historic agreement to expand collaboration in the areas of education, health sciences, natural disaster preparedness and recovery, culture and the environment.

“Working together we can address poverty, disaster preparedness and response, the spread of disease, and access to education,” said Governor Perry. He made the remarks during a signing ceremony at the State Capitol, attended by representatives of the Government of Texas, the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.

“I think our experience has been that it is civil society which is the greatest underwriter of development in the developing world. The political constructs are essential but civil society has demonstrated itself to be able to continue to sustain development of poor people in complex situations in Asia and in Africa,” said the Aga Khan, who is the founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) — a global system of development agencies.

“The agreement that we are signing today opens for us the opportunity to build bridges to the best of civil society in Texas and in the United States and in that sense it is a partnership which we want to now translate into effective action in various parts of the world,” added the Aga Khan.

In its preamble the agreement notes that education is critical to overcoming cultural barriers and that an educated population is a great antidote to economic uncertainty. It stipulates that Texas and the AKDN will support partnerships between their respective educational institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin and the Aga Khan University.

In the area of health sciences, the agreement envisions partnerships on biomedical technology research, telemedicine and maternal and child health. It also evokes the experience of Texas and AKDN in the area of risk mitigation and disaster preparedness, stipulating that the two signatories will work together to reduce the loss of life in natural disasters by focusing on best practices, technologies and research.

Other areas of cooperation include culture and environment. In recent years, Texas museums and universities have hosted a series of AKDN exhibitions, lectures and concerts. The accord is designed to promote a better understanding and appreciation of Muslim civilisations and their historic, cultural and geographic diversity through expanded collaboration with the UT Muslim Histories and Cultures Programmes.

Austin, Texas, 30 October 2009 — At the invitation of Texas State Governor Rick Perry, Mawlana Hazar Imam traveled to Austin yesterday to sign an Agreement of Cooperation between the State of Texas and the Ismaili Imamat. During the visit, Hazar Imam and Governor Perry also held talks at the State Capitol on a range of issues of mutual interest.

The Agreement of Cooperation, which is an outcome of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Golden Jubilee visit to the United States in 2008, marks a historic milestone. It establishes a basis for long term collaborative programmes between the State and the institutions of the Imamat in the fields of education, health sciences, natural disaster preparedness and recovery, culture and the environment.

Describing the importance of the agreement, Governor Perry explained that “traditional Western education speaks little of the influence of Muslim scientists, scholars, throughout history, and for that matter the cultural treasures that stand today in testament to their wisdom.” The Governor recalled the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of Texas and the Aga Khan University last year, noting that with this new agreement, “we further advance our shared efforts to bridge the cultural divide between East and West.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam reflected similar sentiments, saying that the agreement “opens for us today the opportunity to build bridges to the best of civil society in Texas and in the United States.” He explained that the Ismaili Imamat’s concern for the quality of life in developing countries, necessitates engaging the technologies of the modern world. “In order to bridge that gap,” said Hazar Imam, “we come to you in humility and we ask for help. And we ask for that help on the basis that it is good for the improvement of the quality of life of people around the world.”

Sacramento, California, 2 November 2009 — Mawlana Hazar Imam and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a landmark Agreement of Cooperation between the Ismaili Imamat and the State of California today. The signing, which took place at the California State Capitol, followed a meeting between Hazar Imam and the Governor, during which a range of issues of mutual interest were discussed.

Immediately after the signing of the Agreement of Cooperation, the President of the Aga Khan University and the Executive Director of Global Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate collaboration on a variety of health and education matters.

Governor Schwarzenegger and Mawlana Hazar Imam then walked to Stanford Mansion, where the Governor hosted a luncheon in honour of Hazar Imam. In his remarks, the Governor recognised the tremendous work of the Ismaili Imamat in improving the living conditions of people throughout the world, and working to alleviate poverty.

In his address to the gathering, Mawlana Hazar Imam underscored the important role that the California can play by “bringing to our parts of the world the knowledge, the capacities, the generosity, of Californians who want to share their knowledge, their capacities.” Thanking the State of California, Hazar Imam added: “This is an opportunity for which my community and I will always be grateful, not just this year but always. Because what we are hoping for is permanent institutional relations — relationships which exist between men and women who serve the same goals, the same purposes.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam’s official visit to California at the invitation of Governor Schwarzenegger follows a recent visit to Texas last Friday, where he and Governor Rick Perry signed a similar agreement between the Ismaili Imamat and the State of Texas. Both agreements facilitate cooperation in the fields of education, the environment, culture, disaster risk management, medicine and other areas of knowledge, with a view to confronting poverty and improving the quality of life of disadvantaged populations.
