Aleppo, (Syria)

Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Ottri discussed Thursday with Prince Rahim Karem Agha Khan cooperation between the Syrian government and Agha Khan Development Network, and the importance of its developmental and social projects in Syria.

Both sides reviewed the situation and stages of the projects being implemented by the Network in Aleppo and their positive impact on boosting social and tourist development in the Syrian second city.

During the meeting held at Aleppo Governorate building, the two sides underlined the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation in the rural development and small village projects.

Prince Rahim visited the city of Latakia on the Syrian Sea Coast on Sunday 3rd May 2009 and here is a translation to English of the news which appeared in Arabic in several Syrian newspapers (see links below for the original news).

Price Rahim Aga Khan, representing His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance inaugurated the Latakia Branch of the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance in Latakia city at the Republic Street. The inauguration was attended by the Governor of Latakia Khalil Mashhadieh, Mr Mohammad Mufdi Saifo, the AKDN representative in Syria, Mr Tom Kissinger, the General Manager of the Aga Khan Foundation, and Mr Jacques Toureille, the General Manager of the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance.

Mr Ali Tohor, the director of the local Branch of the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance said that the agency will now be providing micro loans to the citizens in the healthy villages and will cover other cities and villages in Latakia province in the near future. He said that the Agency will give micro loans independently as a micro credit product.

His Highness the Price visited the healthy village of Zanghoneh near the town Huffeh and met the manager of the development committee and some of the citizens who have taken micro loans and succeeded in making and enlarging small enterprises . The Prince also visited the castle of Saladin to see the restoration done and financed by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

DUSHANBE, June 1, 2009, Asia-Plus -- Prince Rahim Aga Khan, first son of His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, is arriving in Tajikistan tomorrow on a three-working visit, the MFA information department reported.

During his stay in Tajikistan, Prince Rahim will review programs of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Tajikistan. Prince Rahim is also expected to hold talks with a number of Tajik state officials, the MFA information department said.

Prince Rahim was born on 12 October 1971, in Geneva, Switzerland, and is the second of His Highness the Aga Khan’s four children. Based at the Secretariat of His Highness the Aga Khan at Aiglemont, north of Paris, France, Prince Rahim is an executive Director of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) -- the economic development arm of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). He also serves as an Executive Director at the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM). A graduate of Brown University, Rhode Island, USA with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Comparative Literature awarded in 1996, Prince Rahim received his secondary education at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. In 2006, Prince Rahim completed an executive development program in Management and Administration at the University of Navarra IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Prince Rahim travels regularly to Asia and Africa to oversee the industrial plants, hotel properties and financial institutions, including microfinance program, of the Aga Khan Development Network.

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari on Friday reviewed with the French President's General Secretary Claude Gueant the development of economic relations between Syria and France and means of boosting them.

The two sides discussed all projects and cooperation plans between Syria and France, particularly in the field of infrastructure, energy, tourism and transport.

In the same context, al-Dardari met Prince Rahim Aga Khan and heads of health, education, drinking water, tourism and culture departments at the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

The two sides discussed projects the AKDN intends to carry out in Syria, reaching an agreement on developing cooperation between Syria and the AKDN.

The Agha Khan Development Network is a group of international developmental programs and organizations working to develop and improve aspects of economic, social and socioeconomic development in Syria and 38 other countries around the world.

The AKDN pledged a long-term commitment to Syria in the aforementioned fields. Its activities during the past years focused on economic development and improving the quality of health and education services.

Aleppo Friends Resurrect the Beloved Citadel and City

Aleppo, Northern Syria, (SANA)- With the increasing importance of civil societies and the expansion of their scope to include various aspects of society beside humanitarian and charity work, civil societies specialized in tourism have recently emerged in light of the growing significance of the tourist sector and its relationship to the country's heritage and culture.

Out of love and recognition of the great value of Aleppo Citadel, which is considered one of the most famous cultural, archeological and tourist landmarks in Syria and a symbol of Aleppo city, Aleppo Citadel Friends Society was established with the aim of supporting the administration, rehabilitation, maintenance and resurrection of Aleppo Citadel and its surroundings.

Adli Qudsi, Head of Aleppo Citadel Friends Society and representative of Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Syria, said in a statement to SANA that the Society works on preserving the documents of the Citadel and its surroundings, publishing brochures and periodicals on its history and that of Aleppo city and providing tourist guides for visitors in a number of languages beside Arabic.

"The Society focuses on increasing tourist awareness and promoting Aleppo Citadel through programs and establishing funds for carrying out the necessary restoration and maintenance works," added Qudsi, pointing out that the civil society includes researchers in Islamic arts and the history of the ancient near east, as well as a number of experts, architectural engineers, writers and economists.

He referred to a comprehensive urban study that is being prepared of the Citadel's surrounding to tackle a number of issues related to traffic movement, building car parking lots, establishing tourist service centers and improving the facades of adjacent buildings and the infrastructure of the streets in the area.

Qudsi also pointed out that the Society has recently set up camera surveillance system around the Citadel with a total cost of SYP 1.5 million (1 USD is equivalent to about 47 SYP).

Member of the Society Khaldoun Fansah also told SANA the Society is working on deigning a guide signboard of Aleppo Citadel to help visitors touring the parts and landmarks inside the Citadel and is preparing a guide book in the Arabic and French languages.

In cooperation with Aga Khan Foundation, Aleppo Citadel Friends Society is also working on a project to publish a book on the restoration and rehabilitation activities conducted in the Citadel between 2000 and 2007, which will be an important record to document aspects of the history of Aleppo Citadel.

Paris, (SANA) _Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari on Saturday discussed with Chairman of Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Prince Karim Aga Khan means of enhancing cooperation between the two sides.

Both sides reviewed the technical cooperation with the AKDN in the domain of the partnership between the public and private sector in addition to the investment projects, local development and microfinance.

The projects implemented by the AKDN in Syria, particularly in the domain of renewable energy, tourism, culture, education and infrastructure were also on the table.

Al-Dardari expressed Syria's readiness to develop cooperation with the AKDN in several domains.

For his part, Prince Karim Aga Khan called for opening more prospects of cooperation with Syria and implementing more development projects in the country.

The AKDN is group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalization of historic cities. It has important activities in Syria and more than 38 other countries.

Regional Arab Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education Focuses on Creative Initiatives

Damascus, (SANA) - Regional Arab Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education held a session Wednesday, chaired by Assistant Minister of Education Suleiman al-Khateeb, focused on creative initiatives at the early childhood stage.

Ghanem Bibi of Arab Recourses Workshop talked about the modern trends in the field of early childhood care, as Luis Zemani of Early Childhood Advisory Group presented an offer about the readiness and transition from home stage to the pre-school stage and the elementary school.

For her part, Caroline Arnold of Agha Khan Institution pointed out that increasing interest has been dedicated to early childhood stage during the past few years due to the availability of information and data. Adnold called for paying more attention to early childhood programs and supporting this stage, being an important part in the process of the educational reform.

The second session focused on broadening the programs of care and education at early childhood stage. Dr. Jabrin al-Jabrin from Arab Gulf Program for Development presented an offer on the Program's experience in the field of funding the programs of early childhood in the Arab world.

He pointed out to the project of developing kindergartens for children aged from 3 to 6 years.
