Posted April 1st, 2024 by librarian-hdCHITRAL: The residents of mountainous Arkari valley in Lower Chitral have said the realignment and reconstruction of the road to their area has brought about a ‘revolution’ in their lives.
Representatives of a local organiation, including Mirza Shah, Nadir Khan and Hassan Dulla, told Dawn on Sunday that the road had replaced a narrow bumpy track from Ruji village on the main Garam Chahsma Road to the valley, which used to remain closed during the three winter months due to snowfall.

Winter sports festival supported by AKRSP in Hunza concludes 2023-01-21
Posted January 22nd, 2023 by librarian-hdGILGIT: The winter sports festival, with colourful performances by local athletes and artists, concluded in Gulkin village of Hunza.
The venue of the event was Attabad lake, however, later it was shifted to Gulkin village in Gojal. The event attracted local people and tourists amid freezing temperature. The event was organised by GB Tourism Department to promote winter tourism in the region and for revival of indigenous games. Iqbal Hussain, director of GB Tourism Department told Dawn that the concept of arranging the seven-day event was derived from the snow leopard.

Chitral hosted the first-ever girls’ ice hockey competition facilitated by AKRSP 2023-01-07
Posted January 7th, 2023 by librarian-hdAt the Park Center Ice Ground in Upper Chitral, a hockey tournament was staged for the first time ever in Pakistani history.
The girls’ teams from several academies in Upper Chitral battled against the boys’ teams during the uncommon ice hockey event.
Eight teams altogether, made up of both boys and girls, took part in the competition.
The match between the Fox and Snow Leopard teams, which the latter won by three goals, was officiated by Canadian High Commissioner Leslie Scanlon, who was present with her daughter.

Women's self-help group in Gujarat run bakery, started by collecting savings 4 years ago (with AKDN help) 2021-07-25
Posted July 25th, 2021 by librarian-hdAhmedabad (Gujarat), July 25 (ANI): A self-help group of 10 women in the Nadgakhadi village in the tribal district of Dang runs a bakery which they started by collecting their savings four years ago.
The bakery named 'Apna bakery' sells Ragi based baked food. After four years of hard work, the group is known as 'Bakery Sisters'.
Speaking to ANI, Kalpana Gaikwad of Apna Bakery said, "When we started the bakery we use to make biscuits of flour, but the women working here suggested to start making food of Ragi."

All-weather road built by AKRSP promises Baroghil valley’s development 2021-06-30
Posted July 6th, 2021 by librarian-hdCHITRAL: The residents of Baroghil valley in Chitral region insist that the recent construction of an all-weather road to Baroghil promises the development of the underdeveloped valley in the country’s northernmost region.
According to them, basic facilities are largely unavailable to them as the valley remains inaccessible for seven months of the year due to harsh weather conditions.
The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme recently built the 32km road with four suspension bridges at the cost of Rs102.28 million. It provides all-weather access to the valley.

MoU signed with AKRSP to mitigate effects of climate change 2021-06-13
Posted June 13th, 2021 by librarian-hdISLAMABAD: The World Wide Fund for Nature - Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan), Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) and Serena Hotels on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim to work towards their common objectives of climate change mitigation and climate adaptation, land degradation, food security, biodiversity conservation and enhancing community resilience.
The agreement was signed in view of Pakistan’s needs and to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

50 Himalayan ibex spotted in rare sighting in Gilgit-Baltistan's Hunza Valley (AKRSP Project)
Posted January 31st, 2021 by librarian-hdLAHORE: The World Wildlife Fund - Pakistan captured rare footage of about 50 Himalayan ibex near Passu Glacier in Hunza Valley, The News reported Thursday.
The Himalayan ibex is indigenous to Pakistan's Himalayan and Karakoram range.
WWF-Pakistan’s team captured the footage with a local wildlife photographer to understand how communities have protected wildlife in the area, a press statement by the WWF-Pakistan read.

Each visit is like a whiff of fresh air, since it addresses different issues and brings laurels for Pakistan. The Royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Pakistan in October 2019 raised focus on climate change but equally importantly, it showcased that local communities have tremendous potential to plan and manage their own development, once they are organized and provided access to necessary skills and capital.

Aga Khan initiative harvests water in parched villages
