The Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan and Afghanistan Bénédict de Cerjat visited the academic and health care facilities at the Aga Khan University in Karachi.

During the conversations with AKU President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin and other University leaders, he talked about Switzerland’s strong bilateral relationships with Pakistan.

“I am pleased to learn that the Aga Khan University’s programmes and facilities are accredited by prestigious international bodies like Advance HE, Joint Commission International, and the College of American Pathologists,” said Ambassador Cerjat.

In Murtazabad, a mountain village in Hunza, Pakistan, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) has introduced a system that uses trees to safely and sustainably treat wastewater. AKAH, together with the local community, planted thousands of trees and aquatic plants to filter treated wastewater, limiting the release of effluent into the Hunza River. This “green infrastructure” helps improve access to sustainable, clean sanitation while also restoring the natural ecosystem.

KARACHI: More than 600 students in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda graduated from the Aga Khan University (AKU) in a live-streamed global convocation ceremony that was watched by viewers around the world.

The Aga Khan University’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 is commendable and other institutions should follow suit, said Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh while talking to AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin at the minister’s office.

Mr Sulaiman informed the minister that new solar installations on AKU campuses will cut the University’s carbon footprint by more than 365,000 kg per year, the equivalent to 1.5 million kilometres travelled in a medium-sized car.

Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, born on November 2, 1877, was the 48th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. Through his intimate knowledge of diverse cultural traditions, he played a unique and significant role in the international affairs of his time, and his long public career had many dimensions.

A social reformer, whose concerns included the alleviation of rural poverty and the upliftment of women in society, he was an advocate of modern education and became an ardent supporter of male and female educational advancement in the subcontinent.

CHITRAL: Authorities have completed work on various schemes meant to protect people of Arkari valley in Chitral district from devastating floods that hit the area frequently in summers and washed away homes, rendering many homeless and aggravating their poverty.

Carried out by Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, the massive bulwark erected on the northern side of Sufaid Arkari village of the valley coupled with the schemes of the rehabilitation works of drinking water supply and roads have been completed recently.
