Aga Khan University marks a milestone as over 700 students graduate across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Pakistan. With women comprising 70% of the graduating class, the ceremonies emphasized education, empowerment, and community service.

Mombasa, Kenya, 18 February 2024 – Completed renovation of the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa marks a milestone in its ongoing commitment to provide quality health care to a population of nearly 1.2 million people. The refurbishment has transformed the 86-bed facility into a state-of-the-art 115-bed secondary hospital, offering comprehensive, integrated health services to the communities it serves.

The renovation project represents a total investment of $12.2 million, with significant support from Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The Aga Khan Health Services Tanzania unveiled its first-ever state-of-the-art emergency training center in Dar es Salaam, aiming to improve emergency care education and service provision nationwide. The initiative, funded by the Polish government, empowers healthcare professionals and facilities with advanced resources and training, setting new standards in emergency care.

The presidents of the Aga Khan University and the University of Michigan will meet on Monday in Ann Arbor, Michigan to kickstart a new phase in the partnership between their institutions, which has already attracted more than $7 million from the US National Institutes of Health for research in predictive health and other fields in East Africa.

The Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan University Hospital commenced this year’s World Heart Day celebrations in full swing as the leadership of AKU, led by President Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, and Section Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Saultat Fatmi, along with many other esteemed faculty members, medical staff, doctors, nurses, and enthusiastic medical and nursing students, came together for a vibrant Mini-Marathon on Sunday, 17 September 2023 at the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Center, at the AKU Stadium Road Campus.

Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS-T), has distributed medical equipment worth Sh641.3 million as part of its Sh1.8 billion project meant to strengthen the country’s emergency healthcare.

The donation is implemented through a project dubbed “Improving Emergency Care in Tanzania” (IMECT), a tripartite project funded by the Polish government through its centre for international aid (PCPM), in conjunction with AKHS-T and the government.

Aga Khan University Hospital is the best cancer treatment centre in East Africa in terms of uninterrupted access to essential cancer drugs, a new international study has revealed.

The hospital scored highly for both public and private care.

However, the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) emerged as public health facility in terms of availability of cancer drugs.

Ismaili CIVIC Portugal hosted a blood donation campaign today at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon. The Portuguese Minister for Health and Prince Hussain attended the pop-up clinic, organised to boost blood reserves in the country.

Service and volunteering have long been part of Ismaili tradition, as has the recognition of the sanctity of human life. In the Qur’an, it is stated that “Whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.” (5:32)

A Kenyan man suffering from erectile dysfunction has gone in for a penile implant procedure at a health facility.

The procedure was carried out at leading private hospital in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi to help resolve the man’s situation.

The Aga Khan University Hospital where the procedure took place said this was the first time such an operation had been carried out in East and central Africa.

The procedure was carried out on the 44-year-old man who according to doctors had been suffering from erectile dysfunction for a number of years.
