THE Serena Group has set up a second hotel in the country, the Lake Victoria Serena Resort. The resort, which is part of the Aga Khan economic empire, lies on an expansive piece of land measuring 275 acres on the shores of Lake Victoria.

President Yoweri Museveni yesterday presided over the official opening.

Tajikistan - H.H. The Aga Khan visited Tajikistan. He joined President Rahmonov on the 30th in a groundbreaking ceremony for a world-class Serena Hotel in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The same day the two also visited the Ismaili Center construction site in Dushanbe. Next day on October 31st, President Rahmonov and His Highness leave for Gorno Badakhshan to inaugurate a bridge across the Panj River in the Ishkashim district. The Aga Khan is also visiting the Pamirs Botanical Gardens and the site of the future campus of the University of Central Asia (UCA) in Khorog.

Kigali, Rwanda: According to Robert Mukombozi of the New Times in Kigali, the Rwandese goverment has finally agreed to lease for 30 years the five stars Kigali Hotel Intercontinental and Kivu Sun to Serena Group of Hotels. The final leasing contract is to be signed very soon.

The company, a subsidiary of The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Fund, recently won a 30-year concession to manage the hotel. KAMPALA: Serena Hotels a company owned by Aga Khan is investing US$19m in rebuilding of Nile Hotel International. The Privatisation Unit (PU) on Friday opened the financial bid from Serena Hotels.'The management is providing a commitment fee of $1.2m and will be paying four percent of the rental income every year which ranges between $ 238,000 and $554,000,' the PU director, Michael Opagi, said during the function held at Communications House.

The Serena Hotel in Nairobi is undergoing a major $6 million renovation of public facilities and services and plans are being considered to extend the recently renovated Serena Beach Hotel at Mombasa. The proposed extension which includes three up-country lodges.
