HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURE

It is many years since I last visited the historic island of Zanzibar, whose name alights all that is romantic in the imagination. It is with eagerness and gratitude that we will enter, even if only for a few days, into the culture and the historic buildings of Tanzania and Zanzibar to learn from them and to equip ourselves for our debate.

It has been for all of us a very challenging experience to come to an island with such a multiplicity of history and to be able to listen to the problems of building in the developing world and how they are dealt with.

This article explores late nineteenth-century identity formation and caste boundaries among the Khōjā of colonial Zanzibar. The central concern regarding children born to a non-Khōjā parent was what status, particularly regarding rights of inheritance, the multiracial children born of these relationships had within the caste structure. The case of Nasur Jesa v. Hurbayee suggests that the attitude toward these children was inconsistent; sometimes they were embraced,and at other times they were shunned by the Khōjā community.

Hazrat Mowlana Dhanni Salamat Datar Hadi-ul-Mehdi Saheb-ul-Amar Hazar Imam Sir Sultan Muhammad Datar departed from Marseilles on 24 June 1914 towards Zanzibar in the French steamer "Oxus". The same day Ismailis started celebrations in Zanzibar upon receiving this great news. The whole town was filled with joy and happiness and there was "Dhaam Dhoom" everywhere

Zanzibar gets new Tourism Minister

(eTN) – The spice and tourist island of Zanzibar has got a new Tourism Minister after a cabinent reshuffle announced Tuesday by the isle’s President, Ali Mohammed Shein.

Mr. Said Ali Mbarouk has been appointed the Minister responsible for tourism, information, culture, and sports, taking over from Mr. Abillah Jihad Hassan, who held this ministeral portfolio for the past two years.

As Chairman of Tourism Promotion Services Zanzibar, the owner of Zanzibar Serena Inn, it is both an honour and a pleasure to welcome you here today for the official opening of the fifth Serena property in the United Republic to begin operations within the past twelve months.

Consideration of the marine and maritime dimensions of Zanzibar's history and culture, broader tourism opportunities and major education projects were among the expanded development initiatives agreed by the Aga Khan, during a three-day visit to Tanzania.
In meetings with Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume and Chief Minister Shamsi Vuai Nahodha, the Aga Khan explored various cultural and economic development possibilities relating to the marine and maritime aspects of the island's history.
